Well, you might find it depressing, but there are good sides too. You do live in a country where rape and murder are not all that common. I think we have had a ex-husband kill there spouse and then self 5 nights in a row in Atlanta. A rape is still front page news there while it does not even make the paper here. You can walk on the streets late at night. You can move to another country (AND you are not considered some sort of refugee when you do). If some hoodlum decides to go out and damage cars, they punish him for it instead of making some freaking excuse on how society has failed the little snotnose.

It has its pluses. The snow leopards at the zoo are cool. First time my mom got to use standup toilets (the island where the aquarium is at). Cleanest freaking city in the world. Fastest airside to taxi airport in the world. But I was just visiting (been twice).

yeah, i loved the snow leopards too. fat tails, i felt like tugging on them, if only they weren't in an enclosure. those are probably on loan from other zoos, coz i don't think they're always there.

while rape and murder are probably not that common here, social problems are on the rise. not too long ago, some <10 yr old kid commited suicide. suicide rates are apparently on the rise.

I'm not too sure about the USA, so I don't have a clear idea of what you mean when u say "making some freaking excuse on how society has failed the little snotnose".

no smoking in the toilets
no talking on your hand phone while crossing the street
do they monitor what you say at the 'free speech corner'?
at least they don't still cut men's hair when arriving at the airport.

anyone who is determined to voice out and criticize the establishment will be bankrupted and labelled as hooligans by the not-so-imparticial mass media. Here, criticism is ruled as "defamation" by the judiciary. In the past, they'd be packed off to secret police detention barracks instead of being *just* bankrupted though.

it is next to impossible to start up an alternative media due to oppressive laws. The 2 main mass media companies are government-linked.

elections are a sham.

where i live, less than 5% of the people are hanging out their flags for national day ("independence day" in american terms :) )

guess which country i live in :)

I love the country, I'm disappointed in the citizens, I am ashamed of and enraged by the administration.

i smoke in public toilets all the time. just have to pray that i don't get caught.

there are no laws against talking on your mobile while crossing the road. though for your own safety, I would not advise you to do it. pay more attention to traffic instead.

the 'free speech corner' is a joke. We have to apply for a permit to give a speech. And well, aplications for "out of bounds" topics end up in the recycle bin. Did i mention that there is a police station right in front of the speaker platform?

don't know about the hair thingy though.

oh i was just making up rules that might apply. smoking in the toilets was a lucky guess.

the hair thing: back in the 1970s when men in europe and the US were wearing their hair long, singapore decided that men shouldn't have hair longer than an inch or two. so, when men arrived from europe or the US with their long hair, a barber with some clippers was waiting at the airport to shave their heads.
