lol... then you just usher them outside while they're talking

its poor etiquette to show up unannounced especially now that everyone has cell phones at all times. Exception: emergency

Just ignoring someone who stops by (don't buzz them in, don't answer the door, etc.) doesn't solve the problem.

Just say "Hey, I'm in the middle of something right now. Sorry I can't ask you in. Catch you later."

You will only have to do that twice at the most and that person will stop coming by unannounced. That's a better solution than having to ignore someone over and over.

My mother doesn't have a cell phone and she doesn't call before she shows up.

Well that's certainly more polite, but they're not being polite by showing up unannounced. Furthermore, if they don't get the damn hint that you won't answer the door the 2nd time, they deserve to stand out in the cold and the rain like a dumbass :p

Certain friends are welcome anytime, whether they've called first or not... but those same people also know when it is and isn't OK to disturb me, and if they misjudge that... meh, life goes on. Everyone else: 30 days notice, please. (gives me time to leave town...)

Someone knocks at the door.
I open the door with a look of , WTF do you want ?
They say something like "Hey, just thought I would stop by"
I think, "who the hell are you and why are you at my door", then my brain recognizes who they are and why I don't want to be bothered with them, and I open the door "Hey, come on in" !

I'm not exactly a recluse but I think its the height of rudeness for anyone to show up without warning.
Family is always welcome but they should call first.

NO ONE should ever invite themselves to stay. If family asks I always say "yes". But you telling me you're coming to stay for a while is a good way to get a locked door with no lights on. I am not a hotel manager. And if I were I wouldnt pass out free rooms, I'd just give huge discounts.

I'm the scrooge. I don't like people showing up at my place unannounced. Then again, I grew up in a neighborhood where, unless you were using the door right then, they were closed and locked. I don't like other people at my house unless it's some kind of event like having neighbors over for fight night on Spike or throwing a backyard beerfest or something.

Am I out of touch? Should I loosen up or am I justified in the "It's MY house, dammit!" reasoning?

The last time you showed up unannounced I told you once again to call first. :(

i dont get visitors, but i dont care if people drop by. its nice to chat sometimes. if you mean just walking in without knocking, hell no. knock first, bastard.

That's a no-no since my doors are always locked. I'm talking about hearing a sudden knock on the door when you're comfortably settled in doing something else like watching a movie, playing games, doing yard work, cooking, cleaning, etc. I'm always like "uh... why the hell are you here? I'm busy. Go away." :p

i tend to keep my doors locked all the time as well. but i enjoy visitors. if im in the middle of something, its not too difficult to get people to notice that fact and they will usually say they will come back some other time or whatever

Call first. Exceptions may be made if you bring quality beer and/or food.
Well, no, I still want you to call, but I'll be less of a scrooge if you come bearing gifts.

My parents both live at least a good eight hour drive away, and I usually only get a day of advance notice when they'll be coming by.

yeah but then it seems sketchy like you're hiding something (chopping up bodies in the basement, for example)

I was friends with a person in college who did this. We was a nice enough guy, but after we were friends for a few months he would just start showing up at our apartment door and knock. It got to the point where we couldn't do anything without him. Eventually we just started ignoring the knocking. It took him a while to get the hint, but I felt bad about it as he was a pretty nice guy.

my neighbor comes over unannounced pretty frequently. I don't really mind it, but then again, we share a giant wall with no insulation. not many secretes to hide from each other.

anyone else, I'd prefer if they at least gave me a heads up first so I have time to straighten up, but I wouldn't turn away a friend/family member if they were on my doorstep.

Yeah, but then when your coworkers weren't watching and listening, you secretly pulled me into the women's bathroom and had your way with me so I'd say showing up unannounced is pretty farkin awesome
