Yes, but only because the toes on one side are deformed. I wore shoes that were too small during a growth spurt or something.

I used to hate it but since I snagged a heavy-duty nail clipper (essentially a fancy chrome wire-cutter) its been much less of a problem.
I just ordered one similar to what John Connor linked to earlier in the thread. Looking forward to trying them out.

I'm curious as to why it has the double pivot. I guess it's to amplify the pressure at the cutting edges but I don't really understand how so that's another thing I want to play around with

Let me see what mine looks like. And if it has that I'll post a video. Yours in fact could be different.

I can't see your toes, but I figure a means of avoiding an ingrown toenail is to not cut it back far enough where that can happen. You leave enough extending the flesh where it will continue to clear the flesh. Am I missing something?

You'd think so. But from what I've read anytime you cut the nail, you can force it to grow at different rates across the nail. I think sometimes it depends on the shoes I'm wearing. Seems to happen more frequently when I cut my nails and then have to wear tighter dress shoes for a few days.

I do not wear tighter dress shoes. Stopped doing that. All my shoes are New Balance 4E (wide feet!!!!). For when I want to be dressy I wear my 100% black ones. Nice thing about all these is that they always fit great out of the box!

Yeah, mine doesn't have a double pivot.

Very nice. Gotta love stainless steel.

I'll report back on the other model in a couple of days. Toenails probably won't be long enough to use it on but I'll try it on some thick plastic to get a feel for it.

I debated whether or not to let this thread die a peaceful death, but on the off chance that anyone was interested in the double pivot clippers I got I figured I'd come back for that.

I got these a while ago but never got around to unboxing until today. After I figured out that the locking hinge swings in instead of out like the ones JC pictured, I tried them out.

I can't say that I was impressed. They aren't very sharp and even after trying to touch them up with a diamond sharpening rod, it still required a lot of force to cut through either plastic or a single serve cottage cheese container.

I don't know if it's because of the design or I couldn't get the edges sharp enough but running my finger along the edges, they didn't seem dull. It's conceivable that this is a design feature to help you from cutting yourself. My nails aren't long enough yet for another trimming so we'll see what happens when I can use them for real.

I used to have severely ingrown toenails. Doctors refused to fix the issue so I always had nasty oozing infections. Finally got tired of it in my teens and decided to fix it myself. Applied a tourniquet, heated up my freshly sharped pocket knife, and cut away the offending flesh. It sucked, took a long time as I had to work through the pain, and I lost a lot of blood...but aint had a single issue since.

or, or, i only offer this as a possible alternative, you could get a pedicure

if you want someone to cut your nails, go to a professional. doctors aren't much better than asking your dad to do it

I was born with skin covering most of the toenail sealing them in. I could dig under the flesh with one of those fine scissors to cut away at the toenail, but that never solved the issue. It was obvious even to a child like myself that I needed to have a large portion of the skin removed so the toenail could grow out properly. My parents took me to see the doctors about it several times and they just kept saying to "let it grow out". 16-18 years later I finally had enough of the constant pain/infection/mess and decided to do some surgery myself.

I actually just did a lot of searching trying to find a good graphical representation of what I'm talking about, as it wasn't an ordinary ingrown toenail.
I ended up coming upon a photo and surgical video that shows very similarly what I had to do. It's extremely graphic and NSFW. I'm going to link it.

SERIOUSLY, DO NOT CLICK UNLESS YOU HAVE A VERY STRONG STOMACH.

I'm wondering if you guys with your thick crusty toenails have fungal infections.
While there are other causes (like injury) fungal/bacterial problems are treatable.

Just learned something new, apparently Vicks VapoRub can treat nail fungus for some people.

As you get older, it only gets worse. All I can say is "stay flexible". To bite your nails, you have to be able to reach them.

The fact that we still have to cut nails and brush teeth in this day and age really pisses me off. Technology, get your priorities straight! And get us some Fembots while you're at it.
