Ahem, ever heard of the telephone? It uses a similar concept. 😉

Oh, and I use Trillian. I hate it, but it's the best one there is, IMHO.

Trillian for me. It's nice because I don't have to load up Yahoo or MSN messenger to talk to the one or two people I know on each, plus conversation logging has saved me from looking like an idiot more than a couple times.

Meebo.

Gaim and DeadAIM and all that crap can't even step. 😉

Quit trying to act like you're from the ghetto.

Yes sir, Baked, sir, I'll be sure to act thoroughly white and suburban next time, sir. Thank you sir.

Translation: Fvck off.

Oh man, now we have to hear nerds bragging about how low their ICQ number was.

not bragging and my number wasn't low, but it was the same number backwards as it was forwards 😀

They have an obvious disadvantage though - they're not easy to remember. Hell I don't even have most of my friends' phone numbers memorized, they're all in my cell phone.

Of course it's not often that you'd NEED to remember someone's ICQ number when you're away from your computer, but I don't see any real advantage to using numbers over using usernames either.

One disadvantage being that you cannot change your name as easily. 😉

Inversely, I see no advantage to using usernames over numbers, either.

I use AIM 5.2.asdgasfg and DeadAIM 4.5.

I like how I can still Direct Connect, say what kind of font and color I want, and other customizable things that I couldn't do with Gaim or Trillian. To be honest, Trillian always annoyed me.

I used to use AIM with AIM Ad Hack to get rid of the ad and get more functionality, then I ditched the AIM container completely and switched to Trillian. I'm contemplating a switch to Gaim soon, though, because Trillian has a problem with profiles and away messages.

I just pointed out one obvious advantage. 😕 Usernames are easier to remember. Hell I was going to try out ICQ again recently but I couldn't figure out what my number is.

I suppose that it might be an obvious advantage to you, but definitely not to me. I can remember numbers as easy, if not easier, than names. Furthermore, you eliminate the duplicate key issue -- many, many people in every part of the world share the same name... but an ID key would be unique. Let them have whatever username they want, and allow searching on that, but I don't believe that unqualified usernames are all that grand in any circumstance.

Wow...I just pulled that out of memory from wayyyy back when. Now why can I recall this stuff at the drop of a hat, but I can't remember stuff from class if my life depended on it
