Got a large dinner allowance when traveling. So I end up exploring the culinary delights that are on offer. Never really felt weird about being out alone. But then I'm that kind of guy....

I do about once a week but typically its to a local place with only 16 seats to begin with. Due to that, and their less than stellar decor... most just get the stuff to go.
Amazing food, but just looking at the inside would scare most away.

Oh... and when I am out of town for business I am forced to.

Rarely, and I usually don't mind much. I think the last time was to a decent Italian restaurant; I took my iPad and read it for a large part of the time.

I never eat alone if I have a choice. The only times I don't have a choice are when I'm traveling for work and am unable to book a hotel room with a kitchen.

Never, but I do order out from restaurants sometimes if I feel like eating restaurant quality food. I hate cooking too, I find my time is not worth it for something that takes maybe 15 minutes to eat at most.

I'm regularly out of town for work so I either eat at the hotel restaurant or one within walking distance of the hotel (so I don't have to worry about drink/driving). It felt weird at first but I don't really mind it now. It is usually a pretty quiet evening anyways, just go have dinner out then chill in the hotel room and watch TV in the hotel room. Sometimes go have drinks at the hotel bar and then chill in the hot tub then bed time.

No, I only go to restaurants with my family (which happens less than once a year these days). When I don't eat at home, I eat fast food. In the future when I live alone lacking both friends and family, I could definitely see myself eating at restaurants alone. Everyone already knows that I'm an unsocial failure anyways.

There's something I learned from my fiancee, and it's so true.

Food tastes SO much better when it's with a company/friend/s/on occasion. That's why eating is such a social thing throughout all cultures and history.

Imagine an amazing piece of steak in a beautiful restaurant with your SO. It's SO much more enjoyable and tastes GREAT- you talk, share thoughts, chit chat, drink, eat, soak up the ambiance etc. A great dinner.

Now imagine the EXACT same steak, but it's served in your room and no one else Something is amiss. Sure it still tastes amazing, but you don't really enjoy it as much.

So true. Eating great food is much more enjoyable with company.

That being said, I also enjoy eating alone and have zero qualm about it. A nice hot meal during lunch time alone is good.

When you consider most of us will die alone at the end anyway, does that make us all losers in the end?

I agree with this fully. a good meal is better with good company. even a bad meal is made better.

i also do enjoy eating alone. if hungry and out i have no issues doing it.

I went on a 63-day cross country road trip after I got laid off many years ago.

It was my birthday when I was in Chicago. I didn't know anyone in this city. But I decided to treat myself by going to a fine restaurant- Joe's.

They have this AMAZING stone crab claws. And I got a perfectly cooked filet mignon too.

It was good at all. But I ate and.. left. Felt uneventful.

Imagine if the same dinner was with my fiancee. We would laugh, share the food, talk about how amazing it is, spoon feed her, etc... and actually enjoy the same food on another level.

Smart girl to point this out.

I only eat out by myself if I'm traveling on business and it's unavoidable. Otherwise when I'm home it's nothing more than picking up food to go.

Zeze is right, eating is a social experience. As a sit-down meal it's awkward and unfulfilling when you're alone. The entire experience is built around you conversing with company while waiting for your food and over the meal itself.

I tend to skip the fancy places on work trips. It does not seem right.

False as a general statement. I've been put into situations where I've had to eat In-N-Out with other people, and every time I found it difficult to savor the food when distracted by the conversation required in eating with others. This applies even to home meals to an extent, although it is easier to ignore my family as I see them every day.
