one of my work-bff's got fired this week :( someone getting fired always sets off a new round of paranoia in my mind.

sometimes, I think my chief saving grace is that I get paid less and am willing to work a crap schedule. we've been hiring a lot of really great specialists lately, but good luck trying to convince a solaris guru to work weekends.

This. The boss doesn't really give a shit how much you get paid, but people who work fucked up hours are difficult to replace. People who will only do 9-5 can be replaced within a couple days.

My friend is a manager at mcdonalds and he says he has a huge stack of resumes that include people who have college degrees, so that should give you some idea of how many people are hungry (lol mcdonalds) for a job right now.

I think it would depend on who and why they were fired

Bingo. My last job I was worried for good reason since the layoffs were part of a 'budgetary reorganization'. My new job has only fired people for violating company policies and just being plain shitty at their job

Nope because by the time they would fire me the whole department would be gone I'm that good.

Yes, I do, but not in all cases. If they were fired because they weren't doing their job then I rest assured I'm not in that boat. But if they were fired because of cut backs I get paranoid.

This,
Our last round of interviews for level 1 tech had over 50 applicants, and my boss said we normally only get 5-10. We had old/young, highly educated.

A chick with a law degree applied , but when asked where she sees herself in 5 years, she said, "not here".

Aren't you a dentist and I presume you have a private practice?

OP: Yeah firings suck. They tend to outsource a lot of jobs these days to India/China as well - that's whats got me REALLY paranoid. Why can't corporations be happy with making a reasonable profit, do they really need to drain every last bit of our soul for 10c extra profit.

After interviewing the candidates for our last new employee, I'm not scared at all. I would be impossible to replace without paying way more then what I make. Most of the applicants for the position (which was the same title as my position) were so under qualified it wasn't worth the time. The one's who were qualified wanted almost double what I make.

Pretty much where I fall. I did have an "equal" (in title, not ability) who was laid off in February last year. I didn't really figure they'd cut anyone from our IT staff (we're short staffed as it is), but if they need, I knew it wasn't me. That girl was worthless. She was damn good at running cable and fixing printers though. :)

This is kind of like saying, "if you are standing in a cave and the people around you start dropping dead, do you get worried?" Yes, unless I am wearing a gas mask. You need to make yourself unreplaceable at work, like working the crappy schedule or being super good at what you do.

Yes, whenever there are layoffs, I do get paranoid. I've never been laid off, but I've survived two mergers and one situation where my group was eliminated (they transitioned me into another position) and both times, I said "Enough is enough" and left for greener pastures.

In the second situation above, I was in charge of global server operations and was transitioned into an Oracle data warehouse analyst role. I was like "Uh, no thanks." Too bad I didn't ask them to lay me off and give me severance because I had two job offers within weeks of the announcement.

I don't know what you or JeffG do exactly or what your corporate situations are, but NEVER assume that you can't be replaced. This is especially true if you work for a huge corporation, and never think that because you're "short staffed" that it will protect you. Trust me, I've worked in ridiculously short-staffed IT groups (5 people for 2500 users) and that didn't help save anyone's job at all.

Only the paranoid survive -- live by that quote.

yeah... unfortunately, I have no clue why.

the only reason I know the person in question was fired (rather than quit) is because we were talking about schedule issues in mid-August two days ago (he was the only person in my department whose schedule didn't overlap with mine at all, so we were eachother's go-to guys when we needed someone to cover a shift)

I imagine most of those applying to Mickey D's won't actually accept a job there if they were offered it. They are required to apply to any job in order to keep unemployment checks coming.

When I started working at my current job another guy got hired for the same position (support positions). Our manager told us that we were both doing great. Within a month the other guy was fired.

It made me paranoid that the whole "doing great" thing was just BS, and that my ass was probably on the line too. Well turns out that he just sucked, since I've been here for 2 years now. Phew...

I know a few co-workers who should be fired, but aren't for some odd reason. We've got one guy who has a habit of randomly disappearing during the day. He also acts very condescending towards his fellow employees. Everyone complains about him. I have no idea why they keep him around. He's just low level.
