I can't believe people are this stupid. How do they survive childhood? You'd think they would have been run over by a bus or fell of a cliff or at least been beaten to death by their classmates.

<< pffffft they won't listen man, there are some people who still believe that the landing on the moon was made up and we still can't go into space. >>

The landing on the moon was real???? Get serious.. Seriously though, I know some NASA people who get seriously pissed off whenever those moon hoax shows come on.

Sometimes political correctness gets seriously out of hand. I understand that 9/11 was a horrible tragedy, but the world doesn't come to a screeching halt just because of it. People need to get on with their lives. If they quit obsessing over getting upset over every little thing that has any possible reference to 9/11, they would be alot better off.

I was going to say more, but this petition doesn't deserve any more of my time than it has already taken.

Email the author of that stupid petition and tell him what you think of his little petition. Be sure to include the facts like the story has borne that name for over 40 years and the movie name had already been set long before 09/11.

I would find it offensive if the changed Sauron's name to Bin Laden and the Orc's to Al Qaeda but other than that those whiners are just being PC Wankers.

The Two Towers, offensive? . . . NO, however, I would however be extremely offended if Jackson changed it to "The Twin Towers" (or anything else).

The official title is : "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers." I think all 286 petitioners should boycott the movie (I'd hate to have one in the audience where I go to see it).

Actually, I remember the director giving an interview where he mentioned he was concerned with the name being related to 9/11.

Got me thinking . . . What did Tolkein mean by "the two towers"? It is ambiguous.

Here is the best explanation I found

<< There is alot of speculation as to what Tolkien meant by the title of the second book of his "trilogy", The Two Towers. To set the record straight; his work originally was not meant to be a trilogy of three volumes, rather a compilation of six books. It was his publisher, Unwin, who made/forced the decision to publish his books in three separate volumes and then requested Tolkien to come up with names for these "books".

Tolkien agonized somewhat over appropriate titles and under a deadline pressure came up with the names as we have them now. And it was Tolkien who made sketches for each bookcover -making three versions for the second volume called "The Two Towers". The first one showed the Dark Tower of Barad-dur and Minas Tirith. The second version showed Minas Morgul and Orthanc, but had some extra detail on Orthanc depicting its Key and the staff of Saruman. The third and last version by Tolkien is the one at the top of this page. The detail is poor, but at the bottom of Minas Morgul are the Nine Rings of the Nazgul and a crescent moon for Minas Ithil (Tower of the Moon and drawn white), and under Orthanc is the White Hand - the sign of Saruman.

As for the meaning of the title of The Two Towers I did some digging in Letters and came up with the following passages as to what Tolkien himself thought of the matter:
"The Two Towers gets as near as possible to finding a title to cover the widely divergent Books 3 & 4; and can be left ambiguous- it might refer to Isengard and Barad-dur, or to Minas Tirith and B; or Isengard and Cirith Ungol (1)." [Letter #140]

The footnote (1) to this letter reads:
"In a subsequent letter to Ranyer Unwin (#143), Tolkien is more definite that the Two Towers are `Orthanc and the Tower of Cirith Ungol'. On the other hand, in his original design for the jacket of The Two Towers (see #151) the Towers are certainly Orthanc and Minas Morgul. Orthanc is shown as a black tower, three-horned (as seen in Pictures no. 27), and with the sign of the White Hand beside it; Minas Morgul is a white tower, with a thin waning moon above it, in reference to its original name, Minas Ithil, the Tower of the Rising Moon (FotR p. 257). Between the two towers a Nazgul flies."

We also have another letter, which reads:

"I am not at all happy about the title `the Two Towers'. It must if there is any real reference in it to Vol II refer to Orthanc and the Tower of Cirith Ungol. But since there is so much made of the basic opposition of the Dark Tower and Minas Tirith, that seems very misleading." [Letter #143]
>>

So now we know. :)

Considering that The Two Towers was published 17 years before the World Trade Center was even built, hell no.

This moron has been living under a rock all his life.

I just sent that moron an email. I thought we were the only ones that were bored. This guy apparently is very bored to come up with crap like this. I usually don't rant on here but this struck a nerve.

You know its probably not him alone that cam up with this idea too. he was probably sitting around with his friends discussing it and all together realized this. so its not only him it's him and a bunch of his dumb friends!

Somebody should send him an e-mail telling him that Gandolf is really alive! That would really burst his bubble. Since he apparently hasn't read the books!

I sent him an email too:

To: slashdotwidener@yahoo.com
Subject: Hey silly man, "The Two Towers" was written many years before the WTC was even built, let alone destroyed.

I stumbled across your internet petition and I'm dumbfounded. If this isn't meant as satire, I can only tell you this:

Hey silly man, "The Two Towers," a book by J.R.R. Tolkien, was written many years before the New York World Trade Center was even built, let alone destroyed.

Please don't embarrass yourself by sending this to New Line.

Sincerely,

Joe.

Yes I did!
