These youngster probably never owned an Atari 800 or Commodore 64. It was a "Battle Chess" type game where the battles when 2 pieces met were fought like a side-view / 2D shooter.

Jon Freeman was one of the better designers of the early '80s, and besides Archon helped create a couple of good space strategy games (Starfleet Orion, Invasion Orion), a fun TRS-80 RPG (Temple of Apshai), and wrote a great user manual for Crush, Crumble and Chomp! (an "Atomic monster invades the city" game). Once 16-bit machines like the Atari ST, Amiga, and IBM PC-AT took over he pretty much faded out of sight.
