Speaking for the original Unreal Tournament (UT99), it wasn't another dumb FPS game--it became a cybersport. Playing in a 5v5 capture-the-flag clan match or organized pickup game (PUG) match with voice comm and assigned positions almost felt as though you were a cyber-athlete playing in an athletic event. The action was fast and intense and had the flow of a hockey game where you had to make plays.
I'm not sure how the "realistic" WWII-style shooters compare, but I don't think they're anything like that.
I wouldn't call it mindless; part of being a good UT player is about anticipating your opponent's movements and maintaining awareness of what's going on in the game.
