and if i 'accidentally' get sick?
See my previous post.

the idiot who breaks his own leg doing something stupid is just as entitled to sick days as the person who gets cancer.

Your point?

The woman who has unprotected sex with multiple partners is just as entitled to maternity leave as the woman on the pill who forces her sterile husband to always wear a condom.

There is no way to guarantee that one will not get cancer. There is a way to guarantee that one will not get pregnant...

"if you don't want kids, don't have sex."

Ha ha. Can it really be that simple? I'll have to check with the boffins on this one 😉

At any rate, I'm not arguing for or against paid sick leave. In fact, should that person who broke their leg exceed their paid sick leave, by all means, they should be forced to go into unpaid leave...

Sorry to veer off topic OP 😉

NO. aside from abstinence, there is NOT a way to guarantee you wont get pregnant - contraceptives can and do fail. and although you mocked me for it, are you really telling me you wouldn't have a problem with your employer telling you not to have sex?

Again, why is it MY problem as an employer that someone CHOSE to have sex and became pregnant? Why should I have to pay for it?

No (I would have a problem), but I wouldn't have a problem with him telling me that he won't pay for my wife's sick leave should she get pregnant.

[Edit] For clarity of "No"

but thats exactly what you've been saying - "if you don't want a kid, don't have sex." and i think that's absurd to be telling people that.

Where did I say that?

I am free to do as I wish as long as I take responsibility for my actions. If such responsibility entails my wife taking unpaid time off from work, then so be it.

ok, it might not have been you. but anyways, a company should be assuming that at some point a woman may be getting pregnant. its simply part of life. hell, the federal government said women should be considered "pre-pregnant." and you can't assume in every circumstance it will have been planned. so if they have to go on unpaid leave, the company is basically telling them, "sorry, you screwed up."

The parents will have to pay for their own diapers, their own food, etc. Why shouldn't they pay for their own time off?

And I could get into calculated risk in regard to planning...but I won't.

as i stated before, its simply absurd to tell people not to have sex or think that they shouldn't because of the possibility of pregnancy. do you really think there are a lot of couples out there who don't have sex because they don't want kids? are you telling me that you wouldn't have sex with your SO/spouse if you didn't want kids?

My company offers paternity leave for two weeks and as such I am fine with maternity leave. However being a single guy means I don't get to take that benefit up, but I am still glad it is offered so my co-workers can take advantage of it.

I didn't say tell people not to have sex.

Answer my question, please. Why should I have to pay for someone else to have a child? Why is it MY responsibility to pay for a decision that I had no part in making?

there's a woman at my job that's going to take maternity leave (3 months?) and then quit at the end. obviously if she quits now, she wouldn't get the paid maternity leave. kinda crappy.

That happens frequently. Take maternity leave for the pay then quit at the end to be a stay at home mom.

I don't see why some people have an issue with the way notfred is answering the question. The question is, "Do you agree that women should get paid maternity leave?" There are several ways of interpreting the question unless you have a very limited point of view.

Some people are having a knee-jerk reaction to the question and answering no because they're interpreting it as women are being given something that they as men aren't.

Others are interpreting it as, I'm a man and when I'm married I want my wife to be able to stay home for a while with the baby and it will benefit my family, so yes.

Others are looking at it as, I'm a small business owner and I wouldn't be able to afford it, so no.

Some are looking at it from the persective of a large business owner who wants to be able to attract and retain the best employees and sees it as a carrot they could offer in order to do that.

Others see it as a personal responsibility issue, some are interpreting it as an equality in the workplace issue, some interpreting it as a government mandates issue, and on and on.

Looking at it from as many perspectives as I can manage and trying to determine the most fair answer I would say:

It should not be government mandated. All companies are not equal and though responsible people can have unplanned pregnancies, it's mostly a personal choice issue.

If a company wants to be competitive in attracting and retaining the best employees they should offer it as a benefit to both men and women, but tie it to salary or sick days. Take the higher salary and not the maternity leave or vise versa. This is if the pay for men and women at the firm for the same job is equal, if not, then it should automatically be offered to women employees they want because the costs could be offset by the salary difference.

If a small company can't afford it then they shouldn't have to offer it. They should have a right to pick and choose their employees and employees have a right to choose whether they want to work there or not. If you take a job at place that doesn't offer it then you know that going in and should plan accordingly. If you decide to have a child then it's your responsibility, not theirs.

I do with my company.

You guys sound like you're just bitching because you don't get something that someone else does. Way to go cry babies - keep america where no one really cares about family and slam them back into corporations...communists.

FYI, communism would support maternity leave where everyone pays for the child and time off.

I assumed that post was a joke. Since he said to slam them back to the corporations and then said that was the idea of communists.

Yes.

I'll change my vote to 'no' when women make the same amount as men. I feel it's fair they get paid maternity leave since there still a very real difference in salaries.

But women who decide not to have children do not get this progressive benefit?

For the past 7 years I have not used up all of my allocated sick days. I'm well aware that I lose them at the end of the year, but this doesn't motivate me to get sick on purpose.

Yes, but women have much more control over whether or not they get pregnant than you do over whether you get sick or not.

When did I say paid maternity leave motivates women to get pregnant on purpose?

Replace the word 'sick' with 'vacation' instead. Ironically, that situation applies to me as well. I just found out that I've maxed out my vacation time and I'm starting to get denied accrued vacation time. I have control over my vacation time, but just haven't been able to take it since I felt an obligation to the company due to being the only person in my dept.

When did I say you said paid maternity leave motivates women to get pregnant on purpose?

not expect compensation from your employer when you're not performing any work.

i didnt read the whole thread so maybe somebody already brought this up, but based on that line of thinking, there should be no paid vacation either then i guess?

you can't accidentally buy a house. you CAN accidentally get pregnant. are you saying those who didn't plan on having a baby are SOL and should just get an abortion?

So what you're saying, is that you can accidentally stick your dick in a woman and move back and forth multiple times? Man, I need to have your kind of accidents more often!

If I went out racing and got in a wreck, I wouldn't expect paid leave outside of my normal vacation/sick/PTO time. It was my decision to go racing and put myself at risk. The only people that should be getting paid leave from racing accidents are professional race car drivers. (because that can be considered an on the job accident) I took the risks, I got the rewards, I pay the costs. If I get hurt, it's my fault. Nobody here is going to cry for me when I'm out of work for six months because of broken legs. I was the dumbass who didn't use adaquate safety measures, and who decided that the risks were worth the thrill.

Cool...so when your company offers you short term disability or perhaps even long term disability payments while you recover, make sure you refuse to cash the checks.

The majority of people in this thread are a bunch of jack-asses. The fact is, most women are UNABLE to return to work for 6 weeks under DOCTOR'S ORDERS. My wife and I have 5 kids. I worked for differengt employers during their births, and in each one the policy was different. In most cases, i took 3 days off after the birth and was given PAID LEAVE to do so. The last 2 kids, I took a week. If I had wanted to, I could have also combined vacation time to extend that time.

People in this thread are talking 6 months or longer? WTF? Except when the pregnancy is high-risk or some other factor requires the woman to leave work early, most women work right up through the 9th month. After the child is born, the standard is 6 weeks. Could I have stayed at home longer? yes. Did I want to? Maybe. Did I NEED to stay home longer? Absolutely not. For the first few days, sure...mom should not be walking up/down stairs, exerting herself in any way, etc. But after the 1st few days, Mom and baby are fine while I'm at work.

The arguments here are pretty sad. I have various benefits available to me through my employer, but I won't uise them all. Should I protest and ask them to remove the benefits that I don't use?

My company raised the rates that the employee has to pay for health insurance because of rising costs. at the same time they used that excuse, they also began offering domestic partnership benefits. I assume that all of you against pregnancy leave are also against offering benefits to gay couples?

I worked before I got married and encountered pregnancy leave before it ever became a benefit I could use. Did I begrudge others for it? of course not. get over it, people...

Well, the opposite could be said if they opened up a shop.

Yeah really. Almost feels like an adults vs. kids argument in this thread.

I'm sure as they age out of the college years they will learn to value different things in life. Anyway, paid maternity leave isn't a law, unpaid is. It's up to the owner to decide what type of benefits are provided to their employees. Though I can tell you this, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

you should have to pay for someone else for the same reason that you have to pay for someone else to take sick leave, or vacation time. having a baby is a reasonable, legitimate thing to have to take off work for, just as a vacation is, and just as getting sick is.

How true.

Nice thing is my company even offers paid paternity leave.

<without having read most of the thread>

Yes they should, as should men get the same amount of time as paid paternity leave. Fostering strong family ties would make the country stronger than not having someone man the taco stand for 6 weeks.

only if i get it too, just because i don't have ovaries doesn't mean i should be discriminated against

give me 6 extra weeks of vacation too
