yea well, you be happy with your 200 dollar telly.

whatever the response rate it is .3 megapixels vs the 1-2 million pixels that you can get for just a bit more. as for having 7 tv's...that guy have 7 kids or something?

i do remember not that long ago that a sony 27" crt cost atleast 350 dollars. the new price is the stock dumping price. its nothing to base a argument on value on.

I am happy with my cheap CRT. It looks great and has worked fine.

And four bedrooms + living room + a small one in the kitchen + one downstairs for the PS2 and N64.

CRTs are extremely old technology; they've been available for 60 years.

Comparatively, it makes sense for manufacturers to switch to LCDs. There's greater demand; consumers want thin, large screens. The manufacturing costs are similar, but because demand is higher for LCDs, retailers can charge more, so there's greater profit margin. It's also significantly cheaper to ship LCDs, as they weigh a fraction of a comparable-sized CRT, and as the price of gas goes up, this becomes an important factor for both manufacturers and retailers to consider. This particular set of criteria is not as pronounced in other technology like VCRs (which aren't significantly larger than DVD players), which is why the transition has not been as fast.

Unm, I still see CRT TV's all the time at BB...what are you talking about?

And it's hardly such a fast phaseout...it's been going on for years. What cave have you been living in?

came home one day to find out it wont turn on

it's out of warranty so Im not even gonna bother getting it fixed. Thing's so damn bulky that lugging it to a panasonic authorized repair center would be a pain, not to mention the costs involved with fixing it.
Hate just throwing it away though. Maybe i'll try selling it on CL for real cheap so that someone who can diagnose it, can fix it up for himself

you can't "just" throw it away... in my town u have to take it to an approved recycling center...

yea thats what i meant

What do you mean fast? CRT has been around forever... Shit I remember Braun Tubes packed in wooden crate and straw bale. Them be heavy black and white glass tubes 🙂 DivX was fast, So was DVD-A and SACD. Not CRT.

i meant the transition away from them. they were mainstream as recently as 2004? 2005? and in just a couple of years, they're all but extinct.

divx, dvd-a, sacd were never mainstream.

VHS to DVD went faster than CRT to flat panel.

um, every bb i've been to has walls of plasma/lcd. any remaining crt is relegated to a ghetto isle in the back. its been like that for a while now, crts last gasp was a few wide screen tubes, but those failed to deliver or cost too much and any decent ones are gone now, so its been pretty fast.

I <3 widescreen LCDs so much going back to using a CRT would be terrible.

For television, though, I still use CRTs. My old ones are still working fine and I don't have any need for HDTV. When these go out I'll move to HDTV flat panels and service. If I watched television nearly as much as I'm on the computer (I don't watch TV at all, really) I'm sure I'd have made the transition by now.

Spending $400 for a $27" TV is too much. I remember four years ago when I bought a nicer 27" Sony CRT for close to $200. We don't have any flat panel TV's in the house (7 CRT's) and might buy one for Christmas if there's a deal.

The damn things are expensive, lol.

Yea, but they're THIN!!!

point?

Me think he means Form over Function, which is the fad for some time now.

form matters. try lifting a 40 " lcd/plasma... then try lifting a 40" crt.
try finding place to put that big crt.....

now try that with a 50-60". and watch a film on it. the advantage is obvious. and with gas prices the way they are, americans will spend more on staying at home being entertained instead of road trips or going overseas. flat screen isn't very much considering all that

I mounted a 60" Plasma for a video conferencing room.

...Do you know how hard it would be to even move a 60" CRT down some stairs?

and in a recent news ..3 CRTs were denied entry into a bestbuy because they were TOO FAT ...
the CRTs were told to lose weight before they could be let in

Still used extensively for faxing.

And for Internet access for a significant percentage of Americans.

I got a free CRT with a computer I bought a couple of years ago. I gave it away. My company still has mostly CRT monitors (I brought my own LCDs in).

Edit:
I don't believe for a second that Best Buy didn't have any CRT TVs. Most SDTVs are still CRT.

we were talking about shape not size issues. The CRT's quick demise has a lot to do with what I call "Hanging Picture" effect. People see these flat panels being mounted on the wall and they go nuts.

Alas, I know several people who still use dial-up. Worse still, one uses AOL.

A lot of people are dumping broadband and going back to dial up as they keep raising prices on broadband.

😕

yeap. my dad is thinking of going back to dial up. all he does is send email rarly gets on any sites.

he does not need a broadband connection for $60 a month

Don't mind Dave, he just makes shit up. Hey Dave, did we ever get that 7.0 earthquake you were predicting in California? You said it'd happen within 2 weeks or something like that, and that was last fall.

They were phased out so quickly because they are big, bulky, heavy, create a lot of heat, suck a lot of electricity, take up a lot of desk space or room space, and they cause eye strain (CRT monitors). People are willing to pay a little more to avoid all that hassle.

i don't see how he is makeing crap up. people are dumping braodband (at $60 for shitty service) for dial up.

my dad is a perfect example. he uses it for email and rarely gets online (looks up fishing forcast). he is fed up with the 2 broadband services's he has (the DSL he has now is down nearly every other day). he is looking for a dial up service. one is $15 a month and anothe ris $20

There's still a lot of dialup modems for sale new. Its not like broadband is exactly awesome in the united states in regard to availability.

And I would say Thank God to the lack of flying cars. Think about the people you see driving. They have problem doing it properly in 2D. You want to add another dimension for the stupid to fuck up in?

Your dad is a perfect example of someone who never needed broadband to begin with. So you found one person who dropped broadband for dialup. Hardly the exodus that Dave was implying.
