And I would say Thank God to the lack of flying cars. Think about the people you see driving. They have problem doing it properly in 2D. You want to add another dimension for the stupid to fuck up in?

it would make for a good blooper reel

err, more like messy. Crumple zone on cars work fairly well. Don't think you can do the same with flying cars.

Faster than dial up modems?
Alas, I know several people who still use dial-up. Worse still, one uses AOL.

A lot of people are dumping broadband and going back to dial up as they keep raising prices on broadband.

😕

Don't mind Dave, he just makes shit up.

Hey Dave, did we ever get that 7.0 earthquake you were predicting in California?

You said it'd happen within 2 weeks or something like that, and that was last fall.

Actually I was 4 months off.

Considering from 1994 to 2008 4 months is as close as you could get.

They are lucky it was only 5.4

7.0 is around the corner

What do you mean fast? CRT has been around forever... Shit I remember Braun Tubes packed in wooden crate and straw bale. Them be heavy black and white glass tubes 🙂 DivX was fast, So was DVD-A and SACD. Not CRT.

i meant the transition away from them. they were mainstream as recently as 2004? 2005? and in just a couple of years, they're all but extinct.

divx, dvd-a, sacd were never mainstream.

VHS to DVD went faster than CRT to flat panel.

well, my best buy still has a couple of VCR's for sale when DVD's became mainstream a decade ago.
CRT's are all gone when they were mainstream as recently as 2005.

That is a shelf space issue, not transition speed.

What's funny is how many LCD's are being run at like 800x600 because the text is too small for most people at native resolution. 😛

Your dad is a perfect example of someone who never needed broadband to begin with.

Ah the apologists, can always count on their spin.

Why did you exclude my link that showed the rate of broadband adoption is increasing? I guess silly things like facts are inconvenient to you.

the CRTs were told to lose weight before they could be let in

This didn't get the credit it deserved.

Large CRT's are heavy. Shipping a huge hunk of glass around costs big $$$$. Not to mention packaging and storage space.

My biggest complaint with LCD is viewing angle. I hate how the display changes based on what angle you are viewing.

Get one that was made after 1997?

All 3 of my LCDs at home, and every single one at my old job never had viewing angle issues.

Every LCD has viewing angle problems. It is just part of the technology.

From someone who has spent the last 25+ years staring at a screen everyday for a living, I definately don't miss CRT's, yes they have better color rendition and refresh rates (not noticable for most people), but the elimination of eye strain with LCD's is significant to me and outweighs any shortcomings by a long shot. Just thinking about staring at a CRT all day again gives me a freaking headache

Don't most CRT monitors have better color depth that LCDs?

Yes.
Brightness is more uniform. Blacks are true blacks.

People don't realize/don't care, but even the best thin screens still can't match a good CRT for picture quality.

A year and a half ago, I got a gorgeous 51" Hitachi CRT based HDTV for $550, delivered. Picture in picture, too. I confidently predict that there won't be another form of TV at this screen size and picture quality for anywhere near this price for as long as I own this set.

Nevertheless, I also have two 42" LCD Vizios, two 22" Lcd comp monitors, plus three 19" ones.

I can imagine downloading a service pack for windows or buying a game online (3+gigs) and having to use dial up. I remember the pain....
But alas eventually the CRT is going the way of the dodo, extinction I'm afraid. And with everyone being on the Green wagon, LCD's are much easier to dispose of. I still miss my Mitsu 2060u though, what a great monitor. I gave it to my bro. 🙁

I paid twice that for a 65"
I don't plan on replacing it until I can get a larger flat screen with similar quality for about the same amount of money.

Our main TV is a 17yo 35" RCA CRT, all my bud's have HD flat panels and when the come over they always comment on how my 35" tube looks as good or better than their HD sets. I'm not planning on getting rid of it anytime soon. Besides I still haven't got my moneys worth out of it🙂 It was one of the first 35" tubes made and I paid $1800 for it 17 years ago, that was some major jack back then
