Do some public toilets in India not have toilet paper?

So my brother said this, but I'm not sure on this. It sounds incredible. Apparently some public toilets in India consistently lack toilet paper and you wipe your rear with your hand (or something) and there is a communal bucket of water with a scoop that you rinse in. It sounded quite unreal and not very believable. I have some co-workers I could ask but it's so incredible they'd likely be offended.

I'm not talking about nice toilets in the capital, but maybe just some smaller towns or something.

Wipe with your left hand and wash in the bucket provided (that has been used by alland sundry already). Then make sure you DO NOT use your left hand if eating a meal designed to be eaten by hand, even if it really is clean. Very uncool.

Been there. Used paper where possible.

Don't know about India, but some eastern countries don't use toilet paper. Instead they have a little hose that sprays water at your butt and you wash it.

And oh, btw, I just lost my appetite. Thanks a lot, jerk! :disgust:

nope it's true

my brother went there on vacation and he said exactly the same thing

it also works that way in some other Asian countries (Malaysia, Vietnam, etc...)

Yes, I've seen those and they make sense, although I'd like at least a little water to dry my bum.

dividebyzeroWHAT? It's real! So, you wipe your feces with your left hand. It's now a pooey mess and then you just shake it around a bucket of water that other people have probably done the same thing in, thus leaving your hand "cleanish", except that you cleaned it with feces-soiled water?!

I was at a hotel in malaysia and there was toilet paper, so apparently they make it available for visitors. My brother said that the place he stayed at in India made a special trip to the store for him to buy toilet paper.

Yes, it is true that some places do not have toilet paper. The method described by DivideByZero is not true. What I do is use the bucket to pour water down my back, while using the other hand to clean my ass.

Although this may not seem like a very "clean" method, I believe it leaves my butt the cleanest, and even in my houses in India, we have some buckets, although the spray is also used and prefered.

Is the bucket "refreshed" after each cleaning? I guess in your case you have to refill it before each trip to the toilet, but in some cases do people just reuse the same bucket of water? I suppose do most people wash their hands right after with soap or something?

you pour water with your right hand as you are wiping with your left. I know this because I am an Indian as I do this everyday.

With the toilet paper you get a sheetty and eventually an itchy butt.
Use water to rinse off your butt and clean it will be.

In Saudi there was no toilet paper, just a nasty looking hose and a hole in the floor. I ate some saudi food and got the shits, went in the bathroom at a shopping center and noticed this situation, ran back out to the nearest store, happened to be a shoe store, bought a package of socks, ran back to the bathroom and did my business. Had a few socks left over.

My friend visited India and said the same. It's amazing that the outsourcing that's eroding our middle class is going to a country that hasn't yet perfected indoor plumbing.

Ok, the cleanest is a special thingy that i've used before, after you take a dump, you press another button and a jet of warm water shoots up your butt and cleans it.

and yes some asian public toilet place does not have toilet papers BUT there's usually a vending machine outside selling it.

1. most 3-star and up hotels/ trains (first class and up) in india will have western style toilets - all other places will likely have the squat style ..... squat = no tp

2. carry a tp and purell sachets with you.

3. take those one-use toilet seat covers - even if u find a western style with tp in a PUBLIC place - 90% of the time - it will be umm.. unsittable

HTH!

India has indoor plumbing ... just not the culture of using toilet paper

I cant believe the fact that most of you call it "the thing that shoots water" or "the no toilet paper method".

It's a bidet you uncultured sods!
