do smokers at work bother you?

they've always kind of annoyed me... I mean, it's one thing to smoke. I don't really care and it has no major impact on my life, but the fact that they get to take 5-6 15+ minute breaks every day has always annoyed me.

if a non-smoker were to take breaks throughout the day to grab some fresh air or something, I think that he'd get totally bitched at by everyone, but no one bats an eye when half the department goes afk for 20 minutes to grab a cigarette.

cliffnotes: I need a new job 😛

I've never seen that kind of "discrimination." They shouldn't get more/longer breaks than non-smokers, that's like giving a reward for killing yourself.

Yes they do. Smoking is so useless, it stinks, they get extra break time (even though they are not supposed to), and 75% of the people who work here smoke 🙁

they bother me. where i used to work, they used to smoke out of the window IN THE OFFICE i was working in and the air kept blowing the smoke right back into my face. i get headaches from the smell. i was not particularly fond of smoking for that reason, but i took my own breaks so i didn't complain much. actually, looking back on it, i should have taken more breaks. 😛

thepresence is 27.

Some smokers really do smell bad and it gives me a headache because I have an allergy to something in the mix. But other people really don't seem to smell, so I don't mind those people. I don't think the smokers realize how overpowering their scent is sometimes. It would be like if a guy stopped bathing for a week and came and sat down next to you.

I too am disturbed by how much company time is wasted by smoking habits. All I can do is give them dirty looks...

On that note.... Is it wrong to laugh at them when they someday come to work and report that they have some smoking-related disease?

I smoke, but I worked with high explosives for 11 years so smoking at work was totally forbidden and I got into the habit of not smoking at work at all.

My next job had no such restrictions, but I still never smoked at work. The other smokers did annoy me with their constant breaks though.

i see no problem with it. if i sawed my leg off with a rusty butter knife, you could laugh at me for having no leg, right?

How about this.

Either do something about the situation (like complain to upper management), or mind your own business.

The problem in that situation is not the smoker, but management who doesn't enforce any "company policy" regarding number and length of breaks.

I don't care if they take their smoke breaks, I just get annoyed when they're standing in front of a door or entrance way I have to go through.

Exactly.

It's whiners like some of these people that have encouraged cities to ban smoking ON THE STREET IN THE OPEN AIR.

If smokers are taking more breaks than you do, so what? You think management doesn't notice?

I smoke, and take a 5 minute break every 1 1/2 hours. So I still take less total break time than the people who don't smoke but take a 15 minute break every 2 hours. To top that off, I'm twice as productive as most others here.

I don't have a problem with not smoking in the building. I don't have a problem with not smoking in restaurants. I wish bars in Cali had a choice in the matter. Here in Colorado there are smoking bars and non-smoking bars. That's awesome. What really pisses me off is the smoking-nazis in the SMOKING ALLOWED bars screaming and bitching about smokers.

I don't get how that isn't completely obvious to the people that complain about this.
Odds are if the smokers can get away with it, so can the non-smokers. So just STFU about it already, take as many breaks as you want, or complain to someone who can actually do something about it.
