Do PS3s die as frequently as Xbox 360s?

NFS4

No Lifer
After my 6 month old Xbox 360 bit the dust last night (red ring of death) and I became the latest victim of Microsoft's wrath, I have to wonder...

Is the PS3 less prone to failure? I always hear of Xbox 360's dropping like flies left and right, but I haven't heard a peep about the PS3 keeling over... at least not in any of the news posts on the PS3 I've seen around the web. Sony may get a lot of flak for every mistake they make (and everyone definitely reports on it), but system failures are one thing that I haven't seen.

Anyway, just a thought 😀

People own PS3's? 🙂

the xbox 360 feels and sounds like a peice of junk next to the ps3.
i was very impressed with how heavy and quiet the unit was and it didnt seem to get hot.

tho the msrp and lack of gamea make it a stinker, i was very impressed with the initial quality(that which was apparent)

Kinda hard to report on the reliability when the consoles are still sitting on store shelves. *ZING*

No, I don't own any of the next gen consoles and I'll bash them all equally.

If PS3 is anything like PS1 and PS2, yes.

I haven't heard of PS3 dieing. Just locking up in display cases.

Sucks to hear about your Xbox360.

I called last night and already sent it off at my expense for replacement. I had heard of people having a box sent out to them, but MS gave me the repair center address and told me to ship it in my own box to them using a shipper with delivery tracking.

At this stage 360 consoles were dropping like flies if i recall correctly 😉

Yeah, that's what I thought...

How many PS3's have been sold in comparison to XBOX 360?

I don't think a Sony PS3 is going to be of better quality in terms of QA than the 360.

I'm thinking about the Xbox 360 at this point 4 months after its launch. They were dropping like flies.

The PS3, from all accounts that I've heard, is doing better sales wise worldwide than the 360 was at this point last year. However, I haven't seen widespread reports of PS3 deaths.

Cause there aren't any games to play on it yet.

LOL, I wasn't even playing any games when my Xbox 360 died 😀

First sign of trouble was yesterday when I was using the Media Center to stream music from my laptop. I got halfway through the first song and it locked up with a rainbow checkerboard pattern appeared on the screen.

Then last night, I was just messing around in the dashboard looking at the latest available downloads and such and it locked three separate times requiring a reboot each time. It was at that time that I decided to call MS. While I was on hold, I turned it on again and red ring of death 😀

I'm a 360 fan, but I do have to say that the PS3 seems to be a better built unit than the 360 from the experience I have had with both of them. Runs cooler, quieter, and thus far no major manufacturing problems.

In that account, PS3 is outselling Xbox 360 after 4 months. Text

PS3 has much better cooling system than Xbox 360 and much quieter.

Haha, nice graph. That should shut a few people up in this thread 😉

Here's another useful graph.

Edit - Before you flame me as being a "$ony h8r" remember that I used to be the sole member of the PSWii60 crew. I've played them all, and it's pretty obvious which one has held my interest. 😛

Given the massive amount of Sony hatred, if they were dying in any significant number, you'd see 5 threads crowing about it here and in every other tech and gaming forum.

There weren't many 360-exclusive games at this point after launch either.

The PS3 now has a fairly strong library if you include all the ports like Oblivion. Not of interest to 360 owners, but people with just a PS3 do have enough to play, plus blu-ray discs to watch.

Yeah, its selling fine. There are just so many haters. I just tune it out. Anyways, no problems with my PS3, but I average maybe 20 hours a week at most. The Folding@Home will test it out, but the thing runs really well. Even when its on you wouldnt know it, as its really quiet, and there are no bright lights or anything. Very unassuming. It might actually freak me out if I heard any non disc loading sounds coming from the unit!

Hopefully folding won't break these systems, but mines been okay running for about 30 hours straight, folding.

Yup Purebeast0 or Queasy would be amongst the first to start those threads.

i love the jokes of low sales. no seriously, keep them coming.
regardless, with at least 2m sold at this point, hardware flaws would have popped up, guaranteed.

and well... nothing major has popped up. and the few that people have returned (having issues that are local and not globally across a lot of units), were promptly taken in by Sony and people were sent it back real quick. at least according to reports at the us.playstation.com forums.
