I havent heard of a Wii dying yet either. My launch console is still going strong without a hitch.

nintendo is usually great with quality. sadly, people like to ignore the fact that Sony is also great with quality, across all their divisions, yet they receive a lot of negative press. They are the company to hate, regardless of the fact they are actually a very good company. they have their issues, thankfully Tretton is helping turn Sony around and start bringing all their divisions together, once and for all.

Wii isn't really complex or high tech. 😛
Nintendo has very good track record with all their consoles.

I'm a fan of Sony but they had horrible quality control with first gen PS1 and PS2.

wow, never knew how close N64 was to PSX before FF7

mine and everyone else's sony dvd player failed. i'm guessing it had a similar laser assembly to early PS2s. mine lasted a little longer than most, but still failed.

For real. I'm on like my 4th PS2. But their so cheap you just replace them.

It's like Sony learned something from the razor blade manufacturers.

Seriously with all the PS2 problems? I had a launch original, and have a launch slimline that I never had any issues with at all 😕

regardless, with at least 2m sold at this point, hardware flaws would have popped up, guaranteed.

and well... nothing major has popped up. and the few that people have returned (having issues that are local and not globally across a lot of units), were promptly taken in by Sony and people were sent it back real quick. at least according to reports at the us.playstation.com forums.

You work for Sony, don't you? Or you have family that works for them?

Don't play it much? Maybe just lucky?

EDIT: Guess it's the same like Xbox 360. My Xbox 360 has been going fine, yet others have issues. Some are just lucky I guess 🙂

I called last night and already sent it off at my expense for replacement. I had heard of people having a box sent out to them, but MS gave me the repair center address and told me to ship it in my own box to them using a shipper with delivery tracking.

At this stage 360 consoles were dropping like flies if i recall correctly 😉

your supposed to request for a box ...their not gonna just send it 2 u

You don't request a box, you demand a box. If demanding doesn't work, move up to screaming/yelling.

Given the massive amount of Sony hatred, if they were dying in any significant number, you'd see 5 threads crowing about it here and in every other tech and gaming forum.

Yup Purebeast0 or Queasy would be amongst the first to start those threads.

Not just one, they'd start at least 11ty billion, each 😉

Too much extra time added to the return process waiting for them to send you a box. Since I ship tons of stuff for eBay, I had a perfect box and packing materials to send the Xbox 360 off today without delay.

Or upside down PSX?

I also have personal experience with:
- C 13:00 error on Sony DVD players. Very common problem on at least a half dozen DVD players a few years back. They'd die after 18-24 months (1 year warranty, so why bother fixing the design flaw that caused the problem?)
- Sony Vaio laptop. It works. Sometimes. If I put pressure on a certain spot on the bottom of the case with my knee.

Sony USED to be known for making good quality stuff. Now they make poor quality stuff and sell it at high quality prices.

Given my $2000 investment in Sony branded paperweights, I'd say I have reasonable justification for not liking the company. 😉

They are the company to hate, regardless of the fact they are actually a very good company. they
on the basis of their business practices or the quality of their products?
rootkit fiasco **cough cough**
as an "ignorant customer" sony would see me as, I must say I am hard pressed to come up with a reason to like the company. Besides, there relentless efforts at making everything proprietary really makes me cringe. Face it, there are tons of MS haters out there too, but if anyone deserves more loathing, it is none other than Sony.

I really wouldnt mind if they sent me a pair of R10's tho 🙂 they do make some great almost-out-of-the-reach-top-of-the-line flagship models (usually not the mass produced variants however)

On the flipside, Microsoft's isn't exactly w/o blood on its hands either during its storied history 😉

Being a 360 fanboy, I'll admit that the PS3's greatest strength right now is the lack of reports of dying units. They seem to be holding up pretty well so far, a grand improvement over the PS1, PS2, and 360. It's only been 4+ months, though, so we'll see. So far it's clear skies ahead.

Hopefully folding won't break these systems, but mines been okay running for about 30 hours straight, folding.

Same here. It isn't any hotter or louder than when I turned it on yesterday.

I have heard of a few already. And our launch console was one of them 🙁

On the bright side, I haven't heard of any lately. That's either because the newer models are better or because people have stopped using them as much.

They're getting pretty bad. I just bought a low-end Sony receiver a few months ago, and it's fine, but it was only worth the price because it was hugely discounted due to a new xm-radio, 7.1 version (mine's 6.1) and the simultaneous PS3 launch event.

In my mind most sony stuff now competes with the store brands on quality.

For the most part your right. Think walmart Kraco or whatever.

They make some very nice mid-hi range stuff, think ES line audio and Bravia/SXRD displays. Other than that anything else is utter crap.
