15hrs per day locked in their cell
1hr per day either in their cell or in the gym (nothing else. these are your only two options)
8hrs per day working in the prison to help pay off their debt to society with a low-income job. Maybe, say minimum wage that will go towards upkeep of the prison -they do not get to see any of the money they earn.

Other than that, prisoners should be allowed to study anything they like, provided that they pay for their college (high school if necessary) tuition out of the money they earn working. Studying can be done in their cells.

In their cell, they should be allowed:

1 well kept, self maintained mattress
1 well kept, self maintained pillow
1 well kept, self maintained blanket
1 well kept, self maintained titanium sink with clean running water - not heated or chilled
1 well kept, self maintained titanium toilet. Toiletries to be purchased by inmate's prison job.
2 well kept, self maintained prison uniforms to be replaced only by the inmate's paying for it through his prison job.

Meals to be served individually to members in their cells. No more cafeteria outbreaks.

And that's IT.

If they don't get any of the money from thier job, how are they supposed to buy toiletries? They either need to get paid, or provided w/ toothpaste and toilet paper.

Records could be kept as to how much they've earned and spent on what. They won't actually see the money they earn, but will be able to purchase things with it. Kind of like a credit card. If their term is up and they leave the prison still with "money in their account" whatever's in it goes to the prison for upkeep.

I was watching the John Walsh show today (great show, by the way), and I learned about the state of Ohio funding breast implants for a man! With our tax money, this man got breast implants, because he wanted to become a woman. This is absolutely insane: our tax money shouldn't be spent on such trivial things.

i live in ohio and work for the state. i find this hard to believe.

Relax, Officer Mitchel. He heard it on a television show.

just curious. things i see and hear on the tv and net i believe are ALWAYS true. seeing is believing

They should do enough work to pay for their imprisonment. I don't remember which prison it was but it was some show on the history channel I think, and this prison grew enough food to take care of not only their prison but others as well. So I think that's a great idea. When they're not working for their food, they can dig holes or something. They certainly should not have TV or net access unless that stuff is 100% without cost.

I always wonder what effect it will do to the crime rate, if we start putting mandatory execution for convicted rapist, drug dealer and killer.
Should fix the prison problem real quick.

Prisoners have Waaay too many priveleges. In CA they get better healthcare than state employees.

Prisoners should be punished, not cherished. Conditions should be harsh so they suffer and avoid commiting crimes in the future.

You realize that if you had a policy like this, they'd be walking out of prison w/ 6000 rolls of toilet paper and a lifetime supply of soap. Either that, or they'd just stop working except for 20 minutes a day. If they don't have a choice but to work, it doesn't really matter that they have to pay for toiletries, since they're definitely going to make enough to pay for toilet paper and toothpaste.

3 Square meals a day plus a roof, that's more than a homeless or very poor man gets............

Yes. We need chain gangs, shotguns, 14 hour work days, and books only for 1 hour a day. BUT the sentences should be greatly reduced. If you make it hell but short I think the recidivism rate will be much much less. Prison should be punishment, not a hang out joint to get medical care and food and a workout for the homeless. Time means nothing to these inmates, heck if anything they can't wait to get back.

there is nothing wrong with books, esp. if it will help educate many of the people who were probably uneducated to begin with.

i agree they should work, but not chain gangs.

It's called "moderation" in what they buy. They don't walk out with anything but the clothes (and items) that they came in with. And if they refuse to work, to The Hole with them!

Chill out. This has been in the national news quite a bit lately... If you've never heard about it try watching the news, reading a paper, or browsing on over to foxnews or cnn.com. Just because you haven't heard about it doesn't mean it isn't true.

What else are you going to do? Work out like crazy, get out, go back into boxing, bite someone's ear off, and defend yourself sounding like mickey mouse? Get a life! Prison is for rehab, not packaging up your anger for release when you get out.

Go to school. Excersize discipline.

When I worked in the corrections, the prisoners didn't really have too many privledges. The did have to to work 8hr a day, and for $.25 on the outside. They did have to report for class if they were lacking a GED, or just plain couldn't read. Smoking was outlawed, and all the workout stuff was taken away a long time ago..

The state prison here has cable TV for all the inmates, advanced gym, lounge, and privilages that make me want to go to prison so I don't have to pay rent.

Here in AZ, they have TV, but they can only watch it during certain hours, and even that was monitored. No gyms, they have the basketball stuff, but not much more, they have a small commissary that they can buy little things like deodrent, and laundry detergent, and the such..

I forgot to mension the outdoor facility. From the interstate highway that goes right by the prison (with no chain link or anything around it), you can see everything.

Do any of you know anyone in prison?

Have anyone of you been in jail? Do any of you really know who pays for incarcerating inmates?

Do any of you know for a fact the success or failure rate of recititism in either "liberal" or "conservative" environments?

Are any of you aware that studies have been done, and various methods are used as you describe in different locals? With varying results, none of which are conclusive.

Do any of you remember the boon in prison building by aggresive high dollar contractors who built "modern" facilities, then turned them over to local governments to maintain them forever on your tax dollar?

So is male sex and rape the normal every day occurance. If so this should be stopped, i mean if that happend to me I would have no feeling for the society which allowed/condoned or failed to prevent such a thing. You institutionalize rape like that and I can see why these guys have no compuction about slicing someones throught upon release.

While it is something that isn't suppose to happen, and it is something that can get you put in higher security place, it does happen... When you think that when I was there, there were 20+ imates to the one of me.... There are a lot of things that I just could never catch...
