Do prisoners have too many privledges?

My question is this;

Do you prisoners have too many privledges? I sure they think they do: and to the nerve of some prisoners, they are actually requesting internet access!!!!

I was watching the John Walsh show today (great show, by the way), and I learned about the state of Ohio funding breast implants for a man! With our tax money, this man got breast implants, because he wanted to become a woman. This is absolutely insane: our tax money shouldn't be spent on such trivial things.

What is your opinion on the matter? As a final thought, though...

If you are a murderer, and I was charge of the judicial system, all you would be eating is bread and water, and you would be doing hard labor. Does anybody agree with me?

Vote in the poll, please.

I think prisoners should work a full 8 hour day while in custody, but I don't have a problem w/ them having internet access. The breast implant thing is crazy, though.

in most prisons they do

i watched a special on TLC or discovery (one of those type channels) about a super Maximum security prison somewhere and they were doing it right

each prisoner is housed in a seperate tiny cell , with only 1/2 hour out of the cell a day (to go to a tiny indoor recreation room with a basketball hoop or something)

the down side to this type of setup is the cost, it is very high and with so many people in prisons, it would bankrupt the states to make them all like that

so

we have too many prisoners, not enough prisons, the prisons we do have are crap :frown:

p.s.

i heard on the radio today about a prisoner in California getting a heart transplant. cost CA taxpayers $2 million dollars !! :Q

the guy died less than a year later

I agree. More money should go towards this prison setup, instead of freaking breast implants or the internet for prisoners.

Yes. I won't touch upon the unfairness of the legal system or the absurdity in sentencing, as those are clearly seperate issues. Currently, aside from the daily rapes, prisoners live comfortable lives at the expense of tax payers. This is absurd. Prisoners, in my opinion, should work to pay for their internment. Prisoners should NOT be wards of the state. There is no need for a convicted criminal to have access to cable TV, cigarettes, or many other priveleges.

These murderers obviously weren't being humane when they killed other people. Why should we treat them in a civilized matter?

Maybe in your state. I do not want my tax dollars to go to some incarcerated pervert so he can surf porn all day. And you thought paypal was bad now. Just wait till all the inmates find how easy it is to rip people off and not get caught. Nah, let them watch cspan and CNN all day.

Maybe not the murderers, but what about, say, the white-collars in the pen for, say, racketeering?

i think prisoners should get plenty of time for fresh air, excercise, reading, practicing their faith, meditation, yoga, art, and board games and what not. They should also work at least 8 hours a day doing something productive.

They should NOT have T.V., steaks or other expensive foods, internet, movies, music, or anything like that.

they should also not allow them to become body builders or have those stupid boxing matches.

Because WE are civilized people. Why do so many people think that we should stoop to the level of rapists and murderers?

I think that there a significant percentage of prisoners who can be reformed. This doesn't typically apply to child molesters and murderers, but there are people who have been stealin and selling drugs because they don't know any other way to pay thier rent. If you can teach these people a skill so that they'll be able to get a job when they get out, I think that's a good idea. If they use the internet to help teach, that's great. The internet connection should be restricted the same way as a high school computer lab. No porn, no video games, no ebay, etc. The computers should be in a library or wherever people go to study, not in each prisoner's cell. And I still think that the prisoners should put in an 8 hour day of work.

What's sad is prisoners often times have a better health care system than the regular people not behind bars. If you're too poor to afford that heart transplant just commit a crime that'll put you away for 3-5 years and the state is required by law to give you that operation if your life is on the line.

As I said in my first post, murderers should be getting the bread and water treatment. Not rapists, racketeers, DUI criminals, etc.

few pointers regarding this thread, over 20.000.000 people in the US are in prison, the biggest complains human right groups have about the US is the treatment of prisoners

i believe that prisoners should work at least enough to pay for themselves to be incarcerated, if not more.

but i take issue with the actual poll question:
"Do you prisoners have too many privledges?
Do you prisoners have too many privledges?"

we're prisoners? well, in a manner of speaking, i suppose so.

You bet your ass they do! This is what they should get:

15hrs per day locked in their cell
1hr per day either in their cell or in the gym (nothing else. these are your only two options)
8hrs per day working in the prison to help pay off their debt to society with a low-income job. Maybe, say minimum wage that will go towards upkeep of the prison -they do not get to see any of the money they earn.

Other than that, prisoners should be allowed to study anything they like, provided that they pay for their college (high school if necessary) tuition out of the money they earn working. Studying can be done in their cells.

In their cell, they should be allowed:

1 well kept, self maintained mattress
1 well kept, self maintained pillow
1 well kept, self maintained blanket
1 well kept, self maintained titanium sink with clean running water - not heated or chilled
1 well kept, self maintained titanium toilet. Toiletries to be purchased by inmate's prison job.
2 well kept, self maintained prison uniforms to be replaced only by the inmate's paying for it through his prison job.

Meals to be served individually to members in their cells. No more cafeteria outbreaks.

And that's IT.

If they don't get any of the money from thier job, how are they supposed to buy toiletries? They either need to get paid, or provided w/ toothpaste and toilet paper.
