well i have an antec minuet case. it is super small. it runs pretty hot. i dont even have a cdrom or floppy in it just a hard drive, nforce2 igp board, and chip and 2 sticks of ram , and no overclocking. no cards installed.

i have the copper base arctic cooling super silent tc pro. cost $18 + 4 shipping at svc.com

this is supposed to be quiet. i wanted a whisper quiet system.

anyways.... its temperature controlled right. so ive got a 2500+ barton. that could do 3200+ in a regular board, running at stock speeds.

i stress test the heatsink with prime 95. get this it actually hits 71C on the diode within 10 minutes. fan spins at its max of 2800 rpm and is kinda noisy, but the temp just keeps going up. and the computer actually shut itself off i think to protect itself from burning up into a flameball. i almost thought my chip died. oh well.

looks like its time for me to buy a new fan. hence, i do not recomment this for htpc and sff type cases, though you may be tempted to with its super quietness when not at load.

How much room do you have for fans? It sounds like you have two problems. 1. Not enough fresh air coming in and 2. not a good enough CPU cooling device. If you want silent, go with a vapochill, otherwise, you will have to focus on larger heat sinks and larger/quieter fans. Panaflo makes larger fans that spin slower but still move a lot of air. They are pretty quiet. The noisiest part of my box is the PS fan. Go figure. I got the vantec Stealth 470 figuring it would be "stealthy".

NOT!!

Hope you find a working combo,

Are you sure the heatsink/fan is installed correctly? With the step aligned properly?

even with a good hs/f you HAVE to get the hot air out of the system in order to keep things in the case at reasonable temps. if the hot air isnt getting pulled out (an intake isnt always necessary since the case isnt air tight) then everything inside gets hotter and hotter. the fan on the heatsink blows the heat off the heatsink into the case, it has to leave or youre asking for ALL your hardware to get hotter than what it should be.

if you can put in a 80mm case fan get a quiet panaflo or something for exhaust, i would bet that would solve the problem quickly; especially since fixing the exhaust in my mid tower lowered my cpu temps several degress C, try it, itll work.

that cooler doesnt exactly get good reviews, though nothing as bad as youre getting there. Sure it's installed OK and adequate airflow through the case? Doesnt matter how good a HSF is, if its on recirculating its air its going to get mightly hot.

this case isnt particularly good for airflow.

i think maybe its too tall so it doesnt have much space above it since the case isnt too tall. so there isnt much air above it for it to suck down. i ordered a new much shorter fan, maybe it'll be better

drill a hole in the top for a big 128mm fan and just let the heat go out the top of the case ... heat rises so it will naturally want to go out the top anyway.
