Do most Europeans think Americans are caucasian?

So I went to an event where people from other countries meet up to have lunch. Before going in, people had to put their name, country of origin, and their favorite music on their nametag. So, being Asian-American, I wrote "USA" as my country of origin. When I went in, an Austrian guy approached me:

Austrian: "Why did you put the USA as your country of origin?"
Me: "I am Asian-American.."
Austrian: "You're not American! Where are you really from?"
Me: "..."

I love meeting new people :awe:

We're all just immigrants...

well... except for the Native Americans...

well... they came from Asia thousands of years ago...

but they came from Africa thousands of years before that...

I'm African myself (via Oregon, and Virginia, and Germany, and probably the Mid East or Russia or India or something before that)

To carry it a step further, if you believe in the Out of Africa theory, then we're all African.

Sounds about as dumb as putting any prefix on the front of "American" if you were born here.

There's something weird about a Chinese person with a Texan accent. Although there's something weird about a White person with a Texan accent too. So I suppose that's a bad example.

I don't know about Europeans, but Chinese people think all Americans are white. They thought the Asian-Americans in our group were just retarded chinese people or koreans or something. They think Americans and Brits are basically the same, too.

Asian countries are almost all...asian, so they think that people of each skin color are just from their respective ancestral countries.

When I went to Computex in Taiwan a few years back, I went to the convention center to pick up my badge. The person asked me, "Are you from Africa?"

Umm, just because I'm black doesn't mean that I'm from Africa 🙄

Yeah some people will always be clueless.

If I say I'm from USA, MD/DC - they will follow up with a retarded, "No, where are you REALLY from?"

seems like americans understand the difference between ethnicity, nationality and citizenship.

the rest of the world does not always see things the same way

No, but it makes you African-American no matter what.

I do the same thing to all the people who ask me that. They usually get a confused look on their face and then slowly back away. Or maybe it's because they see my shotgun.

Actually most of my clan and friends I play online with thought I was black for years because I'm from Atlanta...lol....I told them I was but only from the waist down....heheh

Screw the term African-American. Why should I be pidgeonholed. My ancestors came here what, 300 years ago? I don't see regular white Americans calling themselves European Americans. We were all immigrants at some point, but I don't give a shit about African. The U.S. is my home.

I'm just plain old "American" 🙂

Good to see someone who seems to get it.
