Screw the term African-American. Why should I be pidgeonholed. My ancestors came here what, 300 years ago? I don't see regular white Americans calling themselves European Americans. We were all immigrants at some point, but I don't give a shit about African. The U.S. is my home.

I'm just plain old "American" 🙂

can you tell that to the rest of the population? They're all hell bent on sticking to some ethnic origin when we all have none... unless it's from like... the previous generation. That's different.
Polish is one of my somewhat smaller total genetic background, at 12.5%, but, it's also the only recent branch of ancestry in quite a long time.

One of my ancestral branches dates back to a famous American born in the colonies in 1706. Well, one of his brothers... technically the shared ancestry is that man's father, who was of course born in England.

So were they just visiting on vacation and decided to stay? 😀

THIS!
While I appreciate that we have a variety of sub cultures to access (china town, little italy, those tasty ethiopian restaurants, etc) I don't appreciate people who refuse to adapt. I don't care what you say, once your family has been here for at least a generation....you're an american, motherfucker.

So I went to an event where people from other countries meet up to have lunch. Before going in, people had to put their name, country of origin, and their favorite music on their nametag. So, being Asian-American, I wrote "USA" as my country of origin. When I went in, an Austrian guy approached me:

Austrian: "Why did you put the USA as your country of origin?"
Me: "I am Asian-American.."
Austrian: "You're not American! Where are you really from?"
Me: "..."

I love meeting new people :awe:

Well yes, statistically Americans are White or Black. Asians and other compose a tiny percentage of the population.

That depends on who you ask. Lots of people here clearly indicate they are Irish American, or Italian American etc.

Well ... if you go by US TV then almost 50% of the US is black, the 50% is Jewish. Of the jewish half at least one fifth is gay. And maybe 5% is Asian/European Caucasian (usually British or Irish)/...

Ha Ha... I gues the question more appropriately should be "Do Europeans think?"

A person who moves here from Italy is Italian American. If you two people move here from Italy and have a kid, their kid is Italian American. That kid's children are not Italian American.

I don't call myself an Italian-French-German-English-American.

If their child has a kid with another Italian-american... it will be Italian... Just happens to live in the USA, have US citizenship. You don't need to break out "American" until the kid is a mutt.
