Do i need to lap a new Alpha 8045?

... You need to give some more details:

eg:

- You have lapped your existing 8045 and screwed it up
- You have not lapped your 8045 but you have been using it for x months
- You dont have an 8045 yet...

Details please!! 😉
 
Oh, sorry. i have the stock sink on my 1900+ right now. the 8045 is in the mail. do i need to lap it? what should i do to the core, just clean with acetone?

No I dont think so. I dont have any experience with the Alpha PAL 8045 though, so you should seek another opinion on what I am about to say.

You are OK to just put a HSF onto a chip, however it is always nice to clean up the base of the HSF first - surgical spirit is good for this (there are others, basically alcohol (ethanol))

By no means do you have to lap a heatsink before you use it, i mean have a look at the retail HSFs that come with chips - do they look shiny as if they have been lapped to you? 🙂 Therefore if the stock sink does it's job, then you'll be fine without lapping the sink. Of course, no one is stopping you 😀

Personally, I wouldnt bother, just clean up all the old thermal pad / paste before you install the new HSF. - What are you going to use in that dept. btw? Thermal paste? a pad? Arctic silver?

BTW: You probably know this, but remember you'll have to take your motherboard out to install the 8045...
 
I lapped my 8045 a bit. It had big machining grooves on the base so I lapped just enough to get rid of them. Some people have lapped them longer so as to get a mirror-like shine, but I didn't want to remove too much copper, and I'm skeptical of the idea that a mirror shine is necessary. I'm sure my AS3 has filled in any imperfections in the surface anyway.

When i got mine, i just used some brasso to get rid of all the oxidation.
I cleaned the die and the bottem of the HSF with rubbing alcohol and put on ASII.

Thank you, I haven't OCed more because once i get to 146MHz fsb(1605mhz) it crashes about once a week (that may be me almost never rebooting my computer). So i am running at the highest voltage my bios will allow and waiting for a rainy day to see how i can get. Anyone know where to buy silver conductive laquer(sp?) online for less than 15$? please reply if you do. I already filled my trenches when i was waiting for my mobo to arrive, i just need to connect the bridges now.

cool. now that i can do that, I NEED TO GET MY CPU UNDER 50ºC!
 
I lapped my Alpha with fine-grain automotive sandpaper. When I got it, I could see myself in it, but it had machining ridges in the bottom I could actually FEEL. I figured this would cut the contact area between the sink and the core down, so I sanded it down until the grooves were 98% gone (a couple were really deep, so I just sanded until they looked like scratches, and then filled them in with ASII, as I didn't want to sand off too much copper). I can ALMOST see myself in it now, but not quite like I could when it was new, but the ridges are just about gone! 🙂
