It seems that while I was loading rocks today, I hurt my shoulder. The muscle itself is fine. It seems that the pain is coming from the joint, which may or may not be a tendon/ligament? It only hurts when I raise my shoulder (so that the elbow moves away from my body to the side or to my back). Any range of motion to the front of my body does not hurt.

ice it for 20 minutes, no more

edit: I've had a throwing injury that sounds similar. Try to avoid stressing that joint for a few days (no more rocks!) If it still hurts, then go to a doctor to have it checked out.

LOL, that's too bad, because I've got another 1500lbs to load tomorrow. :)

Ice for 20 minutes? Thanks.

I iced from my last post until this one, and I still am. But, it's just as painful, only the joint seems to be a lot stiffer.

well, it's injured! The shoulder joint is prone to injury and can be devastating if not treated well, so I'd be really careful about aggravating it. Are you sure you can't get someone else to load for you tomorrow?

That's exactly why I need to be the one to do it tomorrow.

Come to think of it, could it be the joint itself? It only hurts when I lock it (as in, it meets the max contraction).

I have the EXACT same problem with my right shoulder. About a year and a half ago I swapped a tranny by myself and somehow injured it then. Every time I think its OK I do something and it hurts like hell again. I suppose its time to see the sawbones.

take some anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, advil, bayer, aleve, motrin), but not tylenol, as it won't help in the same way. gotta give it a rest though, unless you wanna hurt more

Symptoms of a torn rotator cuff.

Take it from me, this is not your everyday injury.

If on the job, report it. Next get a doctor's evaluation and THAT is not final!

I was off work for a year with this type of injury.

It all looks fine to me but I am NOT going to wear that fricking elvis green shirt as any part of the treatment.

Cross your fingers, maybe it's just a pulled muscle. Do take the Aleve every six hours for the pain and to reduce swelling. Better turn that chore over to somebody else tomorrow.

Edit The doctor will have you do a set of "range of motion" tests and give you an Rx for Naproxen. It would be a workman's comp. claim if you were on the clock.

1) The pain seems to be coming from between the clavicle and the scapula.
2) I don't have any Aleve.
3) I wish I could.
4) I'm not working, I'm moving rocks for the foundation of a backyard shed my dad and I are building. He's recently had a collapsed lung.

I hope this will go away in the morning.

Are you "tossing" these stones and rocks? If so, use a wheelbarrow to move them from now on. Take it easy!

I would highly recommend not doing too much with it and getting your shoulder looked at as soon as possible. Hopefully it's only a pulled muscle or something like that and not your rotator cuff. I hurt my rotator cuff playing soccer a few years ago and I waited a year to get it looked at so that I wouldn't miss playing soccer in my senior year of high school. But in that time I did a lot of damage to the ball and socket of the joint and also to the cartilage that lines the socket. It actually got to the point where my arm would slip out of the socket just reaching into the cabinet to get a glass. Everything is still great 5 years after the surgery, but had I gotten it checked out sooner, there wouldn't have been as much irreparable damage to my shoulder. Hope everything is ok.

Nothing is swollen.

I was using a wheelbarrow, but I must have been doing other things, like shoveling them on, or hammering nails or lifting walls of a shed... Dunno.

BTW, my doctor doesn't open on Sunday. How sh!tty.

Boy, I wish I hadn't mentioned this to my mom. She insists on applying Chinese folk treatment to me (which does absolutely nothing, from my experience), and when I asked her where the cold-pack was, she even told me that ice was bullsh!t and all it did was injure the body and to the likes of "wind-wet" (a literal translation).

Sounds to me like you've injured your rotator cuff. Like others said, do not put pressure on the shoulders, avoid lifting any weight and minimize it movement. I dont think it's torn yet but it could be if you keep throwing/lifting those stones again. I injured mine from swimming three weeks ago and still have about a week and a half of rest/rehab before i can start weight lifting again! It's a shitty injury but what to do :(
Take it easy and make sure you do lots of shoulders/rotator cuffs strengthening exercise after this to avoid future/recurring injury.

If your dictor recommends an Xray, remember and Xray cannot show a soft tissue injury. The only way to see a tear is an MRI. That is very expensive. Hope it isn't a tear. Chances are it is something much easier to treat.
