Do I have to tip the movers?

I am moving to another apartment about 10 miles away. The move should take approximately 3 hours to finish the entire job. I am paying the moving company 450 to do the job. It is a four hour minimum so I pretty much pay 450 regardless how long it takes.

Now I hear from my friend that I have to tip the movers. Is that true? I feel they are already making a lot of money off of me that I feel stupid to tip them on top of what they are making already. It will be a two man team moving me.

I am moving on Tuesday, although this is from state to state.

I was advised to tip the loaders and unloaders $5 each before they start the job so they know you're a tipper so they'll go the extra mile... and then give them another $5/each when they are done.

So, in our case, $40 in tips.

It's customary, tightwad.

You're either:

A) Too young or too broke to move yourself
B) European
C) Really old and on fixed income

Those are the only types of scumbags who don't tip people in my experience.

If your too broke to move yourself why are you hiring someone to move it for you in the first place.

Moving yourself would be cheaper.

If it will take <4 hours and there's a 4 hour minimum, then they effectively get free money through that. Why give them more?

The only tip I would give the guys that moved us would be the tip of my boot.
They were very late.
When they got there, they parked in front of my side driveway and I asked them to move so I could pull my boat out and tow it to the new place. They didn't and I had to move their truck. They were pissed that I did.
The "leader" was on his cell phone most of the time talking to his wife or girlfriend.
The rest were surly and rude.
Fuck 'em.

Well, if I was given shitty service like that I wouldn't tip either. Under normal circumstances, I'd offer them drinks and I'd tip each at least $5.

bad forum to ask advice on tipping yet alone moving companies. Most here I think are still living at home in their 20's.

If it was a huge job taking 8-12 hours, moving a piano and lots of glass and china they had to be extra careful with, and they were courteous and busted ass to get the job done as quick as possible, I would absolutely tip them.

In your case where it's not a major move, I'd make sure they had plenty of drinks and maybe have a pizza ready when they got done. Of course then you'd have to tip the pizza driver :p

You are moving from one apartment to another 10 miles away and you have to hire a moving company?

Man, call two buddies, tell them you will buy em some pizza and beer when you all are finished and save yourself 400 bucks.

Seriously.... if it's a three hour move for movers, it shouldn't take much longer for you and a couple of friends to load up a Uhaul truck/van with everything.

Do you have something humongous that warrants the hiring of movers?

I do not know if you have top tip the movers Triforceofcourage, but I would if they do a good job. The "tip" does not have to necessarily be a cash payment, but after the move is complete, some pizza and  wouldn't be a bad idea IMO :)

I spent summers as a mover. It's hard work, very hard work. Hard work.

No, you don't have to tip movers. But tell them on the front end "hey guys, try not to nick the walls and be careful. I've got a 12 pack sitting cold for ya and 20 bucks a person for you at the end. And if you're thirsty, here's some water - take all you want." That will do wonders.

The amount of course depends on how much you are moving and how many guys are on the truck.
