Are they paid less than minimum wage like waiters? No? Then no tip.

I hate it when people bring this up because its plainly not true. Waiters make at least minimum wage.

That's being anal, everyone knows that when you say that you're referring to federal minimum wage.

Please read the above link. if the minimum wage of $2.13 + your tips is less than the federal minimum wage, your employer is required to make up the difference. So no waiter will make less than federal minimum wage. That is a fact that that is often missed in tipping threads.

*edit* you mean after tips right?

of course after tips. Why should they make more than minimum wage before tips?

Sorry to derail thread. I usually give $5 to $10 and drinks each if they are nice and don't bang up stuff. Nothing if they screw up.

not really, it's optional. If you like the way the work was done, then tip. Completely up to you, if you had to, they'd include it in the price (kinda like restaurants including gratuties for groups over 10 or whatever).

Yeah, because paying someone more than they are already getting for their work is common sense... Oh wait

My company paid to move me from Pittsburgh to VA Beach. The movers hauled all my stuff plus my truck and my motorcycle.

The move in day was in June and a hot VA summer day (~95 degrees and humid) and my apartment is on the 2nd floor around some tight stairs.

I gave the 2 movers $50 each.

Depending on how much stuff you have, anything less than $20 each is just a joke, IMO.

What if the moving company charged your company 10k and gives their movers 10% each?

yeah, movers are definitely tipped. The hourly fee that you pay them goes to their boss. They don't make much out of what you pay them.

EDIT: of course, quality of service should be taken into consideration. I've often gone the beer/pizza route for tipping, plus a little cash.

It's only mildly relevant. If their income is derived largely from tips, without which they would at best make minimum wage, then you should tip them. Few people can actually survive on minimum wage.

If the movers are just average then I tip them 15%. If they exceed my expectations I tip them 20%. But if I hire the expensive premium super professional moving company, I tip them 25%.

Tip the movers? Seriously?

The point that few people can actually survive on minimum wage is moot. Maybe you should start tipping the cashier at your supermarket or the bagboy or the Mcd's guy to make up for it. That is your business.

The point is that a waitstaff's total income per pay period is NEVER less than federal minimum wage and that is a clarification that needs to be made in these tipping threads.

A tipping thread, awesome!
You paid them to do a job, and you want to voluntarily pay them more? It's your money, do what you want.
Do you tip your mechanic? Doctor? Computer technician? Everyone will tell you they need more money and few people will say no to free money.

Let me know a restaurant that actually follows this.

What usually happens is the crappy staff member gets canned or simply quits. I have seen them bring on way to many servers around holiday times and no one makes shit.

I have yet to see a restaurant track tips unless they are pooled.

That said minimum wage is not what decent waitstaff is targetting, nor what I expect those serving me anywhere to make.

Even grocery employees can pull in $8-9/hr pretty easy and they have 90% less BS than a waiter has to put up with.

The fact that's really often missed is 1) much of these clowns are still living at home and 2) shouldn't be eating/ordering out anyway if they are too financially strapped.

I have heard people here say "it's just pizza, you don't tip", same with freaking haircuts.

We hired a couple Mexicans during our move but we didn't tip them. Just $10/hr and lunch

You don't tip the bag boy? What a tightass. I see that your brain fails to comprehend the part above about income derived largely from tips. I can offer no other explanation for the moot part. A waitress is assumed to make well over minimum wage and their job deserves such pay. It's in the tax laws and everything that their income is derived from tips. A better analogy would be to underpaying the guy at mcdonalds when you order a big mac every time.

The point is that a waitstaff's total income per pay period is NEVER less than federal minimum wage and that is a clarification that needs to be made in these tipping threads.

Actually this is bullshit. Just because they are legally required to make up the pay doesn't mean employers do. Please learn to differentiate from laws and what people actually do.

Okay Dwight :D

Edit:

This topic has been covered numerous times, typically by Seinfeld. At the very least offer them a beverage. If I had to have movers for whatever reason, I prefer my stuff in one piece so I would probably make sure they knew they were getting a tip... probably with a pre-tip and a post-tip.

Good luck and make some friends ;)

I can't wait to live in Australia...this argument will be null and void!

However, I agree with what was said earlier in the thread -- invite a few friends over and pay them with greasy pizza and shitty beer.

I had a washer and dryer delivered last week. Delivery time was 2-4. They called 10 minutes of 2 saying they'd be there in 10 minutes. Showed-up and without scratching/damaging a thing hauled the washer and dryer up three stories and installed it. They were in and out within twenty minutes. I tipped them $20 (ten each) and gave them a perfect 5 on their survey.

Good service gets a tip or accolades from me.

Just talked to a co-worker. He said he tipped the driver $20 because the rest of the guys that helped him move were douche bags. He also said he would have tipped them all enough to get enough to grab a bite to eat, you made that whatever it is in your area.

Tipping is fricken out of hand. People are paid wages to do a job (restaurant industry is all kinds of fuct up). I don't get tips when I go out of my way to please a customer at work. IT'S MY JOB. I expect thank yous and the best would be praises to my manager.

You can tip the movers with a beverage if you so choose but you are already paying the moving company $450 for 3 hours of work. If the movers want more money they should take it up with management.

It's almost as silly an argument as saying "Do I tip the Wal-Mart cashier?"

When I move, I gotta pay for about 4 hours of work so it gets really expensive. Last time it cost me over $700 which was worth it my opinion. 3 guys showed up to do the work which was sufficient. When paying that much money, I like to ensure that it is quality and hassle free service. If there was an option to pay a little extra that ensures such a thing then I would do it, but there isn't.

Tipping is a mind game. One good reason to do it is for good service. Next time I plan to do something like get each of the 3 guys a $25 dollar gift card to a restaurant or something like that which is unique and I plan to give it to them before they start working. I understand why people might think that is nuts, but to me it is for the best. Also, giving them water is a must no matter how cheap you are.
