I made the mistake of referring to two young female college professors as girls. One of the professors gave me a reaming I will never forget in front of a room full of people. She later apologized and told me that she was in the middle of a messy divorce and that she felt I was being condescending. Since then I have been very careful to refer to females as "women" and not "girls".

I guess the moral of the story is guys please do not send your woman into the world pissed off or society suffers. 😛

That's bullshit. I'd bet anything you called her would have set her off, she just needed a reason, and you gave it to her.

they are chicks then we are cocks?

Along those lines...I had a high school teacher who wanted to call all the girls in his class chicks. So my best friend and I told him we'd call him a capon if he insisted on calling us chicks. 🙂

I've never thought of "chick" as a derogatory term.
I suspect my wife would find it a little annoying, but I don't think she'd be offended.

Any woman can be offended by any word in any language depending on the mood she is in when you say it.

heh-heh...much of the time, you don't even have to say a single word to offend teh wimmenz...just a look will do it. 😛

dang, i just searched the thread for a pic or name and found nothing.

*WHOOOOOOOOOOOOSH* 😀

Women mind if you call them girls.

Not true in all situations, and, of course, delivery and an understanding of the situation is key.

You can softly address a group of elderly women as "you girls" in a way that would have them absolutely loving it, much as "mistaking" a mother and daughter as sisters can ingratiate you with the mom even if everyone involved knows it wasn't a true mistake.

Context is key.

Also, I've known somewhat harder edged "women" who called each other chicks and even preferred "dudes" to call them that.
