Do drivers in your area do this?

Is it just in my area or will drivers go faster if there is another lane present? I see this regularly on my drive to work where a 55mph one lane road expands to 2 lanes. At least once a week a line of cars will be stuck behind someone doing 45-50mph on the single lane but as soon as it expands to two lanes that same person starts doing 55-60. Same speed limit

I see it on the express way too. 2 lanes? 71mph. 3 lanes? 82mph. Same car

Not in my area; when two lanes are present, a huge pile of cars eventually forms behind two cars doing ten under.

My favorites are the ones who think the speed limit reduces whenever you are alongside a semi. I see it all the time. I always maintain proper distance from the car ahead of me. When that car ahead of me starts passing the slower moving semi in the right lane they will always slow down at least 5 mph sometimes more for no apparent reason other than they are next to a semi. As soon as they are past it they speed up. Moronic if you ask me as they usually slow down below the posted speed limit and are in the left lane to boot.

I don't have these situations where I live but it's common knowledge that the width of the road influences the speed at which people travel.

This is why visually or physically reducing the width of the traffic lane is a common tactic in urban street design to "enforce" the 30 km/h limits.

It happens all the time around here. Ten MPH under the speed limit when it's one lane, then 10 MPH over when they get to the passing lanes.

I'd like to give people the benefit of the doubt and say it's because they are afraid to go too fast on the narrower single lane, but mostly I think it's just petty egos not wanting to be passed.

Either way, I say get up under 'em, get 'em loose and put 'em into the wall. Boogity boogity boogity!

In my area, the left lane is full of cars and the right lane is mostly empty. People think they're too good to drive in the right lane so they don't and go slower because of it. It's great and hilarious.

Yup. It's because people are assholes. They can't bear the thought of someone getting ahead of them, and fuck you when there's no recourse for passing.

No

Yes this happens daily to me and it annoys the fuck out of me. I am on a 2 lane road with idiots going slow as shit in the left lane, then it turns into 3 lanes and I go to pass them and they instantly speed up and try to match me and not let me pass them. I think people just get butt hurt when people pass them for some reason.

Then on the way home the same thing happens when going from a 1 lane road to a 2 lane road then back to a 1 lane road.

Around here, if speed limit is 55 mph then everyone is going 60-85.
I can't recall the last time I got trapped by someone going under the limit.
Usually people will rage about being trapped behind someone going the speed limit.

Yes. Although I don't drive on roads like that often. When I do it always amazes me that you are stuck behind then doing 45 then when it goes to 2 lanes you have go 80 to pass them before it goes back down to one lane.

Yes, they're assholes. You see the same games on dual lane roads. Straightaway with double bars? 40 fuckin' mph. Broken bars appear? Holy shit, we're doin' 60, cause you're not passing me motherfucker! Double bars again? 40mph...

Yes, along with a host of other stupid things. We give out driver's licenses like candy to any retard that can scribble their name on a piece of paper and manage to push the button to start the car.

I'm of the opinion that driver's license tests should be taken annually and be fucking grueling. If you can't figure out when it is your turn to go at a stop sign you should not only fail the test but also lose your car.

I would say this is a problem here, but it's totally legal to pass on the right here so if I need to pass I can usually figure something out.

Anything stupid thing you can possibly think of I can guarantee you DC metro drivers do. For some reason they bring the worst traits of all the places they come from and display them on a daily basis.

What I hate more are people who go 10 under on the highway, and then go 10+ over as soon as they exit the freeway. It's as if they are afraid to drive more than a certain speed.

It's not the two lanes. People speed up when anyone tries to pass them. You can be on a four lane road, overtake someone doing 55 and they'll speed up to 60, 65.

For some reason people like to drive with other people. I drive with my cruise control on. I will be driving on the freeway in the middle lane. Someone will come up in the left lane and catch me. They then will match my speed and drive in my blind spot. Dumbshits.

It's claustrophobia. If the road feels narrow people slow down, if it feels wider they speed up. You see the same effect when there are Jersey Barriers close to the road versus wide break-down lanes. Same roads, same number of lanes, when there are barriers everything seems to be squeezed down and speeds drop to compensate.

A lot of people don't realize that they're speeding and only slow down after overtaking someone. Or else they quickly become aware that if anyone is watching the two cars, it's the passing car that's going to get nailed. So they slow down and fall in line.
