Where I live there's a lot of single-lane, twisties and steep inclines that the poor little Camry's and Accord's can't quite accelerate up. Add steep downward twisties and you end up with roads that don't really need speed limits, physics keeps them from going too fast.

Except in parking garages, everyone goes like 30mph, cuts through parking spots to not spend the time going around the actual turn (like 30' away), etc in parking garages.

I automatically assume that if passing lane shows up on a standard 2 lane road, people will speed up. That's because 90% of all people who drive on 2 lane roads have a broken cruise control. It's either that or they pay no fucking attention to what they're doing. So I'll assume the former.

I will say that in my experience, when a passing lane shows up on a standard 2 lane road, most people move over after passing. Unlike a 2 lane expressway where people will constantly sit in the left lane.

Let's see; around here:

People slow down to pass semis
People slow down going through intersections that have a SOLID green light
People cut you off and then go 5-10 mph below the speed limit
If you're maintaining the appropriate distance between the car in front of you, you're pretty much guaranteed to have a car wedge in between and then go slow.
People in the left lane match the speed of the driver in the right lane
If someone in the left lane is puttering along and you do anything to indicate your displeasure or to indicate that they move into the right lane, they get passive aggressive and go even slower
People use right on red as an excuse to not stop and cut you off

I could go on, but that's enough for now. Drivers here would have to improve just to suck.

"Most"? You've witnessed a lot of head-on accidents by people who stay in the oncoming lane?

You're one of those? That's not being passive aggressive. That's a great big FUCK YOU.

Yup. It's because people are assholes. They can't bear the thought of someone getting ahead of them, and fuck you when there's no recourse for passing.

The doozies are when some asshat passes me (im +6-7 over) and he gets way ahead of me (country roads) and guess who is stopped at the light as i roll up to it.... LOL

my wife gave me a drive cam for xmas, so i can record all the stupid shit is see on my 32 mile commute.

I can pretty much 100% guarantee that guy has been you at least a few times. Happens to all of us, even if just doing the speed limit and passing some little old lady doing 25 in a 45. You're miles down the road, then you get caught at that red light from hell, and putt putt putt, here comes grandma. Even better is when they happen to get the green light in perfect timing and go whizzing past you.

When I kept saying "Passing Lane" in my post, I'm referring to road that adds another lane for a short time to allow traffic to make passing maneuvers without using the opposing lane.

in the past 3 weeks i have had 3 drivers nearly t-bone me in a 4 way because they blow the stop signs. 2 going straight through and one turning left when i had a green light. i pulled out just enough so that the 2 going straight had to swerve to avoid clipping my bumper. It's good to look a ways down a road at 4 ways.

Yep. And I make no apologies for slowing down through intersections. I've avoided being hit by idiots, mostly those who think there's no reason to stop before making a right on red.

I think maybe people get out of those lanes because they realize that they're relatively short and will end soon.

We have a road like this nearby. Two and three lanes for something like twenty miles, with the three lane sections only lasting a couple miles each, then switching to the other direction. It's notorious for fatal collisions, with a lot of head-on accidents.

This happens to me constantly but I'm the slow poke in a box truck. The best is when your at the light together they floor it, you hear the motor wind up, the front of the car lifts up, just to drop back down as they slam on the brakes at the next light and they do the same things 2 -3 times in a row until I catch the open green and blow past them.

I always go for the coast in. A month ago I was minding my business going down the highway. I see traffic stopped up in the horizon. So I mossy my way up to the stopped traffic. Next thing I know some dudes flailing his arms at me freaking out yelling out the window dude all your brake lights are out ALL OF THEM!!!!! I'm like damn thats not good, thanks buddy. So I keep cruising on down the highway and realize I never hit the brakes, I coasted right into the traffic. Sure enough I get home all the brake lights work just fine. The dumbass must not of been paying attention and almost rear ended me.

The time you don't pass the slightly slow person is the time you get stuck behind them as the next light turns yellow and you have to stop. (When normal speed would have resulted in a fuel-efficient green light). It doesn't always work, but sometimes it does... and isnt the environment worth it. Brakes waste gas which means more pollution.

I use to live near an aging 45mph 2 lane road. 90% or the time I was stuck behind 40mph traffic. They upgraded the road to a 4-lane road... and I rarely passed anyone while doing 49mph on that same road. I think some people freak out on narrow roads..like they do on bridges and slow down.

1. As you're passing a semi somebody could come up an on ramp and zip over in front of you or into you.
2. They get so caught up in the fact that you're going slow that they don't notice the stop up ahead.

Hopefully you are doing that in the right lane, if so I could not care less. If I was dictator for a day I would institute the death penalty for trucks that move over into the left lane before a traffic light next to a truck in the right lane so they can have a snail race to the next light. Dump trucks around here do that all the time and no they aren't turning left at the next intersection.
