FYI, DVD's were the same price so it's nothing new. Also, going to Best Buy and expecting decent prices is your biggest fail.

Yep, and 20 years ago, we were bitching about the price of those new-fangled compact discs..HOW can they be $15.00? Hell, a good vinyl LP is only $9.99!

(and I remember buying the latest vinyl LP's for $1.99! Outrageous!!

Netflix - rent 99% then buy the 1% that you really care about and will watch several times.

There pricing is a little weird and what they due pack into the set is ridicolous.

For example Avatar is 29.99 on Amazon, however the extended 3-disc extended edition collectors cut is 24.99. What I can figure out is that the regular cut of Avatar has also a DVD in the box. However the extended edition has 3 Blu-ray discs in the box. Why is the normal cut $5 more?

Bad example. The reason why the 3-disc edition is cheaper is that it was released this week.

Don't forget that not only are you paying for the 10cent disk, you are also paying for the content (movies can easily cost over 100million to make) as well as the years of development that went into the creation of bluray. Sony didn't pull bluray out of their ass you know...

I still think they're overpriced.

90% of the Blu rays I buy are at about $10 each. You just have to wait more for those deals. Oh, and I think I saw a whole bunch of $5 blu rays in one of the Black Friday ads. I think this year will get the market penetration of blu ray to a high enough point where you will see blu rays go on sale a lot more. HDTVs are cheap and blu ray players are easy to find around $75-100.

Adjusted for inflation BD are cheap compared to laser disks. Those were expensive about 30-45 ea! I only had about 10-15 before DVD came along. DVD was not superior IMO but way cheaper so it took over. here you are getting a way better pic than both for cheaper than 15-20 yrs ago prices. Maybe justified....

No, they are over priced, They do however making buying dvds pointless, the level of detail is just way superior. So rental it is until they stop with the greed.

Sony won the war with HD DVD, what did anyone really expect that to do...lower prices?

Most I've ever paid for a single BR movie was $20 and that was the release day for Avatar and came with both the BR-D and the DVD. Everything else has been in the $7-$15 range. Most of my movies are Disney ones and they always are accompanied with a coupon bringing their price into the $7-$15 range depending on movie. I payed about $25 TOTAL for all three of the Toy Story movies and that includes the DVD copies, digital copies, and I had two free tickets for TS3 in TS2 so there's another $15 in value.

Everything else I have are free shipping fillers from Amazon for like $7-$10.

When you throw a BR on a 100" screen and then follow it up with a DVD...you'll probably gladly pay the price premium. They are night and day difference at that size.

The dominant format has ALAWYS fallen in this price range. The newest VHS movies were always $20+, same for DVD and now the same for Blu-Ray

I find deals on BD all the time. I refuse to buy a DVD if it's available on BD, though, as always, I will wait until the price is right.

meh. BR movies are always $3-6 more. hell for toy story 3 you had 3 options for the movie.

DVD $14.99
BR $19.99
BR collectors $22.99

teh collectors had the BR movie, the DVD version and one copy you could put on teh computer or whatever. so $22 for all 3 was a great deal.

I see MOST new releases are like that.

This.

I've never paid more than $17 for a Blu-Ray movie, excluding box sets.
Having a 58" plasma and a PS3 makes the small difference worth it.

Do you ever remember DVD reaching $35 for just a movie? (Even adjusted for inflation).

Zin, I don't expect great deals vs. online, and I buy stuffs at BB even a few dollars higher, I don't mind. What I've been a bit ticked off about is the prices of Bluray discs.

Atrocity is when they put old classics on Bluray and charge an arm a leg for it, when in fact your TV or DVD up conversion will show you the same quality picture with a regular ole DVD.

Prior to Blu Ray, some B&M stores were still selling DVDs for $25. DVDs were easily $30 bucks early on if you bought from B&M stores.

I dont pay more than $22 for blurays, thats new ones. If you shop around online you can find deals.

I was at Bestbuy looking [at/for] some movies and I think that the prices for Bluray discs are ridiculous. Even the older movies are $22.99; the newer movies can cost upwards of $40! What's even more absurd is the trend of packing a lot of stuff no 's' that I don't want with the package of a new movie, thinks like a regular DVD, a digital copy and other junk no 's'.

What the hell happened to just put a freaking movie on a disc and selling it? And why does a Bluray disc cost x3 times a regular movie?

I think the cost of producing Bluray should have been absorbed a long time ago, and now it's just gouging for profit no 's' with the pricing. What do YOU think?

(no, I don't pirate movies).

i think you should work on your grammar.
i know chinese is your native language but still, this is embarrassing.

Dvds and blu-ray cost nearly the same to manufacturer. It's price gouging at its best.

No it is not...alot of money went it developing blu ray technology and this money needs to be recouped.

DVD technology is in the latter stages of its life cycle so it development costs have already been covered.
