dizziness when standing up

Does anyone else have or know the cause for when I stand up after sleeping or watching tv I sometimes/often get dizzy . Sometimes its bad enough that I have to hold onto something until it passes. I also lose my vision sometimes for a brief second when it happens.

It always passes in about 5-6 secs , but its worrying.
I don't have high blood pressure, 122/76 , and I have never smoked and I don't use alcohol.

The other issue that I haven't been able to resolve , and I have tried hard, is tiredness.
I can sleep all night then within two hours of being awake I feel physically like I'm low on energy. I tried doing things like drinking extra coffee, and while I feel more alert, I still have low energy.

The extra coffee actually makes me feel worse, because I'm so alert I can't sit down and rest. So I'm wide awake but feel physically lazy.

Tried vitamins, drinking more water, walking.
All blood test, etc are normal.

What (and how much) are you eating? Also, how much coffee do you drink and when do you typically have your last cup of the day?

It may partially be the fact that you're getting up too fast. Whenever I hop up from sitting for a long period of time, I get the same sensation. If not, you may want to check out your diet, especially if you're tired often times.

Thanks for the replies so far.
I normally only drink maybe one cup in the morning.
I tried increasing how much I drank , thinking maybe it wasn't tiredness, but just sleepiness. But it just made me more alert, but still low energy

My diet I know isn't the best.
its basically.
cup of coffee , bowl of cereal , usually shredded wheat, in the morning.
lunch is usually something like hamburgers, soft tacos, pizza, ham and cheese sandwich
dinner spaghetti with garlic bread, or chili, salad.

I don't eat a lot of sweets. One pack of oreo's will last me two weeks.
I also don't eat a lot of things like potato chips or snacks.

I drink mostly milk, water, sometimes soda, 2liter will last me over a week.

tried taking a general multivitamin.

Someone suggested taking guaranna, but I though it would probably be about like the coffee. More alert, but still tired.

I wasn't too concerned with what you were eating, only that you were eating enough to avoid low blood sugar. Although, I can't really verify that so maybe you are better off talking to someone in real life about this.

Get some exercise. Do ten pushups a day for a start. There are lots of exercise and home bodybuilding videos on Youtube.

Check your blood pressure when you get dizzy after standing up. Try one of the Omron blood pressure devices. They are accurate and inexpensive.

I had this happen a few times. I actually fell down once after getting off a treadmill. I then did crunches, stood up, walked a few feet and then fell down.

The gym attendent checked my blood pressure which was very low at that point. She said it was probably a combination of dehydration and low blood pressure. I wasn't drinking any water while on the treadmill.

If it is low blood pressure then that is not really a bad thing. Just get up more slowly when you have been sitting down for a long time.

OP, it's normal when you stand up, to have a brief (second or so) period where your vision may narrow. It's caused by the fact that your body is suddenly going from a very relaxed (sitting) position, to a standing position, and it takes your body a second to boost the blood up to your brain. If you're not taking blood pressure medication, that feeling shouldn't last more than a second, like I said.

If you're on blood pressure medication, your blood pressure is being held artificially at a lower setpoint. Doesn't mean your body can't make the adjustments, just means it usually won't happen as quickly. Call it 2 seconds, 3 at the outside.

If you're talking 5 seconds or longer, or if your vision is going more than a "gray out" (narrowing), then you're likely suffering from low blood pressure. Had a friend whose son had that problem during his teen years. He'd stand up too fast, he'd pass out, or darn near. Make an appointment, talk to your physician, explain what's happening, and see if they have any suggestions. While you're there, they can do some blood work, check for anemia, etc. You can also ask about diet and exercise while you're there, and make your doctor happy that you're getting serious about being healthy. :)

Marvdmartian is correct from what my doctors told me. I was having the same problem and asked my doctor about it. He said that when you're lying down for a long time and suddenly get up, it takes a few seconds for your heart to pump blood back into your brain, in those few seconds, you'll get dizzy and your vision goes blurry.
