I think it's the franchise itself -- I'm not the only one who hasn't payed the earlier Divinity games, and the developers aren't known for anything else.

The >$1 million games have been veteran developers known from multiple titles, and/or games set in better known franchises.

OTOH they have gameplay ready for the kickstarter campaign vs concept art and promises.

This. InXile and Obsidian have established track records in multiple games in multiple franchises , which works very much in their favor.

Larian, with only the lesser known Divinity titles under their belts, cannot realistically expect to land in the same ballpark as those guys. Yet. Deliver a good product, and their reputation and support will grow for the next time.

Come on people, if you like old school rpg's then this game looks fantastic. If you like games like Ultima 7, Divine Divinity etc then you should like this.

I will give them a couple of bucks for sure, I have bought Divine Divinity on GoG.com months ago, and I like it. I only play it occasionally though, my current and only game-in-progress is probably a couple of months old by now, but I will complete it eventually. I especially like the atmosphere, the story and the detailed environments despite the game's age. In fact most reviews I've seen of DD are good, and it scored 4.5/5 stars on GoG.com from more than 2,000 user reviews.

I myself have yet to see most of the game since from what I can recall I barely just started to explore the open world after the first dungeon when I stopped the last time. It's the only Divinity game I've played and own though, I am far from knowing even a fraction of the series and its lore. I might have to play more than just DD (Beyond Divinity, and Divinity II) if I actually do back them up for their Original Sin game.

650K (with PayPal) hit! Plus, Kirill Pokrovsky, Larian's in house composer, gets his own orchestra to play with at 700K

One of the things bothering me is that the stuff that is listed as 'stretch goals' are already in the pre-alpha builds. For example the 1mil stretch goal is day/night cycle, and weather that effects spells. If you watch the videos they have been putting out it is obvious that most if not all of that is already in the pre-alpha builds. You can see video's in which the PC's pick up henchmen as well. Pretty much the day we hit the $500,00 stretch goal we had video of the homestead in the shelter at the end of time.
So, I have to ask, are these really stretch goals, or is their real goal 1mil and they set their funding goal low? If so what is going to happen when they don't reach their 1mil goal? Are they going to be able to finish the game? Are they going to rip out parts of the game that is already in because we didn't reach the stretch goal?

In general I'm excited about the game, but I'm a bit worried that they are not being really ethical in the kickstarter campaign.

They probably threw something together really quick just to show off potential. The stretch goals make them actually set more time aside to do those things right.

re: day night schedule:

A lot of people expressed the same confusion. They explain exactly what they actually have in the game vs what they will adding.

In a nut shell currently nothing reacts to 'day/night'; the stretch goal is to actually have a reaction to day/night (for example town folks going home). The update is quite update in what they intend to add - I think it was around #20 but you can search for it if you care...

re: > You can see video's in which the PC's pick up henchmen as well.

The stretch goal is to change them from generic NPCs / bots into real characters with stories, banter, etc.

They are just putting together little demos to show off what they mean. Just like how Obsidion showed a picture of what project Eternity was going to look like. Basically have a couple of people work on it real quick as a preview for what you are aiming for.

Read that more carefully, it says "NPC Schedules, Day/Night Cycles and Weather Systems have an impact on NPCs and monsters."

It isn't saying they don't have day night cycles, or even weather necessarily, it's saying they will add NPC and monster reactions to those already implemented features of the game.

TotalBiscuit did a WTF on the pre alpha, hopefully that will surge a bit more to the KS. I'd love for it to hit 1m.

I backed this, hope it turns out well. I have a Kickstarter addiction, I'm currently backing 18 projects (games) and I think only 1 has actually completed so far (FTL).

I ended up backing this as well. I've backed 32 projects and have gotten about 4 of them so far (one was FTL). But they all seem to be on track and I'm not, as of yet, too concerned about any of them not coming through. Not all of them are games but most of them are.

The only one I'm concerned about is FleetCOMM: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mercenary-games/vigrior-maneuver-warfare

Long lack of updates until the last week, beta was supposed to be out in August and it didn't happen, people left the team, etc... They just recently gave a daily build to backers and as far as I can tell all that build does is show a menu system with animated background, no game there at all right now.

Looks like it will probably end on about 900k. A pity because the last stretch goal is a good one, but oh well. Still looking forward to it.
