I believe diversity today is more represented by those with strong cultural ties interacting with basement dwellers rather than specific minorities.

Anyone remember the Melting Pot? The US has always been about Diversity. It has always had a segment of the population that resisted it too, but whether it was the Irish, Italians, Chinese, or African Americans, groups from the Middle Eastern areas will also one day be just part of what makes up the US.

The US, Canada, Australia, and increasingly Europe have not been forced to be diverse. We have chosen to be, mainly for Demographic needs. One exception would be the current Syrian Refuge crisis and Europe. It is only unique though because it is happening in Europe, rather than the usual Refuge Crisis situations that happen in Africa and occasionally Asia.

China is a pretty huge beast, and it's pretty fucking diverse. Over 56 ethnic groups, man.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_China

There are more Mongols living in China than there are Scots in Scotland, for crying out loud.

All of those combined are still only about 8% of the total population. It also fails to take into consideration that many of those groups are either

1) oppressed (e.g. the Tibetans)
2) so long-lived with the Han Chinese that it would be like distinguishing between English Americans and Scottish Americans today (many of the groups shown there)
or
3) geographically distant from the majority (e.g. the Uyghurs)

Additionally, China does not allow remotely the same kind of ideological/political diversity that Western nations do when we traditionally think "diversity".

China values uniformity, and while technically they have some degree of diversity, it's more like something they had to fix via thousands of years of authoritarian government than something that actively contributes to Chinese culture on the whole.

We now remember the Pot, but forget the Melting.

Putong ina mo! 😉

<----married to Filipina for 37 years. I know em all.

That's exactly the first one I learned.
I specifically asked him how to say motherfucker.
He spelled it out putang and didn't put the mo on there though
He's gonna build his mom a house back in the Philippines

Diversity simply means "more of us". Sadly, there is nothing diverse about diversity today.

Of course, people will be sure to take this the wrong way - So I'll make sure to mention that I'm married to a Latin 😉

We used to live in Washington and recently moved back to Ca to be closer to our kids. My son said he could never live in that part of Washington again because its not diverse enough. We pretty much only had Whites, Blacks and Mexicans there. He wants more diversity. I was kidding with him when I said, I guess that means you want to be around more people, where you have no idea what they're saying. I love diversity, but whatever happened to assimilation?

What happened to assimilation?

I'm from Texas and have been my entire life. I've been through any and every time type of immigration - Chinese, Mexican, Indian, South American - you name it. There is only ONE major group that does not assimilate into culture. There is only ONE group that has a press 1 for English and press 2 for... well, you get my point.

I work in consulting with an absolute shit ton of people in the other parts of diversity - yet there is only 1 group that never makes it to that level and coincidentally never speaks the modern language that 97%+ of this country speaks. It's pathetic. Not so much the lack of learning, but rather their pathetic expecation that everyone learn their language for themselves. Wait, what? Learn the language of an immigrant for the immigrant? To anyone with common sense that seems so bassackwards, but people still seem to amaze.

So the Melting Pot works still, except for those who have received special dispensation not to melt by means of the political process?

Assimilation takes a few Generations.

Actually, you're right. All the immigrants I know from the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc., all speak English. They seem to take the time to learn before they even come here.
