Disturbing trend in recent Vampire stories

What is it with these recent Vampire portrayals in movies, books and TV.
Vampires that aren't fried by sunlight. That have no weaknesses.

One of the things that makes for good fantasy/mythology, is balance. Each creature that has some major advantage/power should have some weakness. Strickly from the point of view of a cohesive fantasy enviroment, if the superhumans are not kept in check by some weakness than they would wipe out the ordinary humans.

This seems to be brought out by a romantic fantasy by females about vampires. Granted any author has the right to change current mythology but in my opinion doing so without being carefull to retain literary balance only cheapens the product.

What is it with these recent rants.
Rants that aren't full of anger. That have no outrage.

kids just dont have the same level of angst as they did in the past.

lol. People who complain about vampire accuracy make me laugh SO FUCKING HARD. Guess what, Dracula wasn't the first vampire story, not by far, and stories about undead super-humans who suck blood have been told for THOUSANDS of years. PLUS THEY'RE NOT EVEN REAL!

Grade A+ FAILRANT, SUCK A DICK IS YOUR PRIZE

You'd think they would have more angst, given that they're cooped up inside all day because their overprotective parents are deathly afraid their precious babies will get kidnapped by sexual predators.

I suggest the OP take some pointers from this. It's not great, but at least there's some anger!

Not to mention that 90% of the inherent 'abilities' and 'weaknesses' of Vampires were inventions by either 19th/20th century writers or Hollywood. The original stories don't mention a lot of those things.

True; in Dracula they don't explode on contact with sunlight. I think he was weakened slightly, but that's it.

Vampires vaporizing by sunlight was an invention of the movie Nosferatu, which is an unauthorized version of Dracula.

There was some older series (fifteen + years ago?) about vampires that could walk about in the sun if they had soil from their graves in their boots.

No doubt its cheap sauce.

Next thing you know they'll go green and join a trade union with werewolves to start building GM hybrid cars together.

All part of the Vampire Agenda.

i for one welcome our new vampire overlords.

In Soviet Russia, Vampire drives stake into YOU!

Yo Dawg, I heard you like Vampires so we put some steaks in your Vampires so you can eat steak while you stake vampires

Now that some people have posted their opinions about the worthiness of a thread that rants about fiction, they can go back to the Star Trek thread and continue complaining about compromised authenticity. 😀

All the really angsty ones are off being elmo apparently... :disgust:

Departing from the conventional knowledge about mythological creatures actually makes it easier to suspend my disbelief while reading about them. I find it likely that, if such creatures were to actually exist, they would not be exactly like we expect them to be.
