Do what I do ... blame Hollywood for all the World's ills.

I was curious as to why there was so much interest in the recently released "Twilight" movie. I watched it recently on a long flight and ... well, if I were still a pre-teen I might have enjoyed it. Since I am not ... I didn't.

What is it with these recent rants.
Rants that aren't full of anger. That have no outrage.

kids just dont have the same level of angst as they did in the past.

Of course they don't, they are given everything they want. If not immediately, they are after just about a minute of whine.

Vampires that aren't fried by sunlight. That have no weaknesses.

One of the things that makes for good fantasy/mythology, is balance. Each creature that has some major advantage/power should have some weakness. Strickly from the point of view of a cohesive fantasy enviroment, if the superhumans are not kept in check by some weakness than they would wipe out the ordinary humans.

This seems to be brought out by a romantic fantasy by females about vampires. Granted any author has the right to change current mythology but in my opinion doing so without being carefull to retain literary balance only cheapens the product.

Maybe it's to balance out the piss-weak vampires from Underworld?

I'll tell you one thing, though. I fucking hate Twilight, which I presume is what your rant is about?

this whole balance of super powers thing? It's a literary tool used to help drive some other point home, or help push the story along. Essentially, it's for the weak-minded novelists, who can't put enough thought into their story beyond the angst-y romance.

A real vampire story would be about how man attempts to prevent his destruction at the hands of "super" vampires. War, with essentially another species. That would be a good story, and maybe throw in some of the romance that vampire stories seem to require.

This whole balance of the world thing is unnecessary, and weak. A weakness could be a mental thing too, instead of a physical weakness like UV light. Make them strong and capable, but dumb. Or so cocky that they are their own enemy.

What's with super hero movies where they ALWAYS win? No, really. Imagine if spider man got totally killed by some black guys with raid cans at the end or something, or luke skywalker actually fell in the shaft of the deathstar, or superman got caught by electrical wires by his cape and died of electrocution.

At least the ending would not be as predicable. :p

Not to mention that 90% of the inherent 'abilities' and 'weaknesses' of Vampires were inventions by either 19th/20th century writers or Hollywood. The original stories don't mention a lot of those things.

True; in Dracula they don't explode on contact with sunlight. I think he was weakened slightly, but that's it.

well, Dracula had weaknesses that were eventually ignored, even in later versions of that character. Running water, must have earth from his home with him. Only the Nosferatu films kept this element going.

A lot of them never play on the premise that a vampire must be invited inside--they can never enter on their own free will. i always thought that was a pretty strong element, playing into the seductive power of the creatures.
