distrobuted rendering machine?

lets say you need to render a big 3D animation of a design or something like that. something complex, rendering can take days so

can you speed it up by distrobuted computing?

could you build a PC for instance with 5 motherboards, five cpus, some ram for each, a HD for each, a NAS to store the final outcome, and gigabit lan for each?

if you had like 5 athlon xp 2000's thats some good collective horsepower right there. could you send the file to this machine, have it split up into equal chunks and then have them chew through it?

or how about....all those unused computers on a night in the labs at uni....could you use a distrobuted computing software to send the data out to all the unused PC's so they can crunch away?

3D software packages come with or have utilities available.

nice!

i sense a computer society project coming up! plenty of spare parts lying around,

A drunk driving simulator just came to my school. It looked pretty silly, they had a cabinet of like 5 or 6 PCs driving the game, and the game looked like complete crap, ran very slow, and the AI and physics were crap/nonexistant. It was funny because any modern PC could do better.(on the other hand, it looked to have an extremely high level of AA, but when everything else is below PSOne quality...well, come on, at least throw a geforce 2 in there and give burnout quality graphics)
