Dishwasher broke....

The dishwasher that has been in my home since I purchased it almost 3 years ago started leaking a week ago. I called out a service tech to come look at it and said the main pump is gone on it and would cost $400 to replace.

He recommended just getting a new one for a couple hundred more.

I'm not sure on where to look for free reviews on 24" dishwashers.

This is a similar unit to the one that I have now.

BBY

For those that can recommend something I am looking for a energy star and stainless steel to match our other appliances in the kitchen.

I also saw that Lowe's is offering free delivery and installation (after rebate) on any appliance over $394. My budget is around $500 or so.

I've had good luck with Kenmore's before. We currently have a Kenmore Elite in stainless. It does a great job.

We got a Kenmore last summer and I have no really been that impressed. It's certainly better than our old one but it does have some weird issues. The silver wear basket seems to be rusting some of our knives right at the point where the blade touches the basket. Rinsing doesn't always leave the items spot free, it's about 50/50. Wooden spoons still seem damp after the drying cycle even with a lot of time dry. Maybe we have unusual dishes and bowl but we have a hard time getting them to stand up straight.

We've had no problems with the actual washing of the dishes. All the dishes are always clean, no spots. The heated dry cycle works great - its not too loud or anything. However, if the pump goes out every 3 years then thats something I don't want to invest in again.

What did she break? Prop her up and give her another dish towel!

I came in here to tell the OP to slap her.

For those recommending a Kenmore, be careful. Kenmores are made by other ocmpanies, so if you don't post the model number it probably won't be the same one.

If you want something quiet, look to Bosch. If you want something middle of the road, Whirlpool makes some great machines. Just make sure you get something with a hard food disposal, 3 sprayers and the quiet rating that you feel comfortable with.

Anybody with a bosch? I hear they don't have a heat dry with the heating element on the bottom, but they heat up the water which heats up the dishes, and the dishes retain the heat which in turn drys the dishes. I hear on plactics the heat doesn't retain as well as china, therefore the plastics don't dry well. Is that true?

A lot of higher end dishwashers will have a built in hot water heater. The big advantage to that is that its a controlled temp. Bosch is famous for being quiet and the double filtration system they use.

I've found most of the salespeople at Sears are fairly knowledgable about the different washers they carry and know who makes each Kenmore. If they seem clueless then find a different saleperson.

We ended up with a Kenmore Elite with a stainless steel interior, not sure who makes it. It's worked fine except that it leaves the soap in the soap thingie some time, not sure why.

Just bought a Kenmore for the gf last weekend. It has the racks that are 100% nylon or whatever material they use so they cannot rust. I personally have a whirlpool and it does everything I ask of it. Both are rated high in consumer reports.

People bad mouth GE (even salesman). I've bought nothing but GE and have no problems.

Just get a quiet model. You should be able to do so for under $500.

I guess what I am saying is that spending over $500 for a dishwasher serves the same utility as choosing a BMW when a Ford will accomplish the same thing.

one appliance repair website's take on GE.

Some good info on their forums regarding fixing appliances.

I saw some of the Boschs online but it looked like the low end ones in my price range didn't have heat dry.

One of the main selling points will be installation, delivery and removal of the old washer.

I'll take a trip over to Sears tomorrow and see what they have to offer. I'll also check out a local retailer (PC Richards) as it's less than a mile from my home. Maybe they can work out a deal.

Does anyone have a subscription to Consumer Reports online that can link me to some of their top rated stainless steel dishwashers?

The one that I currently have is a Whirlpool DU1050XTPS - not sure I want to go with another Whirlpool again as this one is only 3.5 years old or so.
Wow. I think the one back home is at least 10 years old, maybe 15 or more. I was fairly young when it was bought, but I don't remember specifically, and I of course can't check the label for a manufacture date.
Tappan brand.

So I went to PC Richards and Best Buy today (didn't have time to go to Sears as well).

PC Richards had the Whirlpool DU1100XTPS for $520 plus installation and delivery ($150) = $670+ tax

Best Buy had the Whirlpool DU1055XTSD for $449 + $150 for install and delivery but they were out of stock and it would have to be a special order.

Best Buy also had an open box Kitchen Aid KUDS03FTSS which retailed for almost $1200 for $729. Now I love buying open box electronics from BBY but not sure how I feel about a open box dishwasher. The unit looked like it was in good shape aside from all the sale stickers on the unit which I asked could be removed before I got it.

I also have a $300 gift card from Xmas to BBY which I was going to sell but I could use it towards the purchase.

An open item dishwasher from best buy was probably a floor model or something someone bought and didn't install. I wouldn't feel bad about purchasing one like that with such a discount at all. You will always have the manufacter's warranty too.

Are there any similar reviews on 18" dishwashers? We don't have one now, and really the only space in the kitchen would be for an 18" since our kitchen is pretty small and the sink is centered over the two larger cabinets, with a free 18" on either side.
