I'll be surprised if this lasts more than a few days. For the vast majority of average joes who were oblivious to the whole situation and just now realized what's going on now that the channels are pulled Dish will probably start getting an even greater flood of calls/complaints. I've fulfilled my contract and could leave at any time if I wanted to, but I'm going to ride it out for a bit as DirecTV doesn't offer an equivalent to Dish's Top 50/60 which is what we have.

One dollar a month credit to our bill for the lost channels? You've got to be sh!tting me.

EDIT: Isn't South Park supposed to start their new season this week?
I remember when there was a dispute between Dish and the company that owned our local ABC affiliate last year and we didn't have ABC for a day or so Dish was pretty cool about that and gave us $5 off our next bill. Not a bad discount for one channel that I rarely watch that was down for only a day or so. But that was only for a handful of medium-sized markets so I guess they could afford to be generous. This affects all Dish customers to some degree and really hits the people hard in the markets where they lose CBS. The situation definitely sucks.

Now if you were under a contract with dish and you are subscribing to these channels in question, does that mean that they broke the contract and that you no longer have to subscribe?

KK

Nope the contract says the channels are subject to change. Hell they could get rid of all the channels but 1 and you still have to pay the price you agreed too.

i doubt it, if they could only broadcast 1 channel, i'm pretty sure you would be able to get out of your contract.

they hate me i think, i got the 1st three months free with my deal, then i paid 1 month regular price, now i get 5 weeks credited for non service, at the end of my 1 year i'll only have paid them like $240 or so and i get to keep the dish and equipment at the end of the 1 year.

According the the contract they can. I am just telling you what the contract says. It says they can remove any channel they want.

Just a few more hours and viacoms channels will go bye bye and dish network.

actually they can remove a channel/change a channel if they want. THEY can NOT take away every channel but 1. And NO the contract does not say that. When you sign a contract for a monthly service you have the right to expect the service to be the same throughout the contract. Sure they make take away a channel or add a channel. But they can not take away all but 1. they would be getting there pants sued off.

Even with losing Nick, MTV etc they may get sued by subscribers trying to get out of the contract. which they will be able to do.

edit: but it sounds like in a day or two this will blow over. so i doubt it gets the point people either sue or cancel.

What surprised me is that this stupid scrolling banner was being displayed on my TV as well... and I have cable! Cable users don't care about Dish Network crap... I don't care if the only channel they get is WE.

$39.99 per mo after the first 6 months.

I really want DirecTV because of DirecTIVO and I prefer not to support the cable monopoly (Comcast).

If you don't have DirecTivo, you should get it. There is no comparison between it and the other DVR's out.

Yeah, they were trying to reach Dish Network customers, but the fact was that Dish Network's customers were the only ones who didn't see it, since Echostar was blacking out the text.

Didn't stop Viacom from trying it for a couple of days, though. I guess they were hoping to catch some echostar techs sleeping at the controls.

I think the cable companies and directV proudly displayed that to convince people to stay with them

Viacom is playing hardball. Just saw a commercial on SpikeTV that said "Dish Network has yanked the following channels:" and listed them. At the end of the commercial it gave phone numbers to call to sign up for DirecTV or cable service.

I wonder who is going to cave first. If Dish Network customers start cancelling their subscriptions I think Echostar will probably agree to any terms.

whow !! i feel bad for you dish subscribers....

A TV w/o Comedy Central....worthless....

The channels are back.

My contract expires on the 12th. I'll be canceling then.... I don't care if they were gone for only 36 hours, with the ammount of crap I've put up with dish...

I first signed up for dish because they advertised locals in my area. Little did they tell me they didn't have ABC and the WB.... ABC was coming "SOON" which equated to 6 months and the WB has no plans to be carried

Meanwhile DirecTV has gotton locals and has ALL of them... imagine that.

In addition, the local channels I do have are the LOWEST BITRATE I have ever seen. It looks like a 60 minute Divx file compressed to 100 megs. Watching the Tonite Show, Jay Leno's suit has all these blocks etc etc...

It's so not fair. California has about 20 local channels for 6 bucks a month. We get an amazing five channels for the same price, lower bitrate etc. They don't even lower the price of the locals.... Without our WB station because they feel they don't need to carry it because it's not on the "Must Carry" list... Too bad our WB station wasn't even around when the last "Must Carry" list took effect... Next one takes effect in 2006 or something. So Dish just takes the stance since they aren't on the list, you should just pay $1.50 for a station out of New York, even though a local WB exists.

So, anyways, I have to pay 1.50 extra a month for a WB station out of New York because they don't carry ours and have no plans to, it took 6 months for ABC to come around, they take away channels, their bitrate on my locals sucks, and they increased rates...... yeah....

Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. That stinks. :frown:

Yeah my locals are pretty bad too, though maybe not that bad. For some reason they also want me to pay extra for UPN.

All of my locals are really clear.

One thing I noticed though was that on some of the locals, when showing syndicated reruns of shows like Cheers, Friends, Seinfeld, etc, the quality would suddenly appear much lower with less color depth and less sharpness. Regular shows coming in off a live feed like newscasts, network shows, etc. are nice and clear. Since I work at an ad agency where we deal with the local television stations all the time anyway I asked one of our sales reps why that was. He said he thinks it's because the source video is analog for a lot of the old shows (i.e., analog tapes) and that's why it doesn't come across as well on satellite sometimes because satellite's sometimes sharp enough to show the poorer quality. Not sure if that totally explains it, but it would seem to make sense somewhat. I also have cable via my cable internet and the difference isn't as noticeable on it (mostly because our cable quality sucks to begin with.)

I'm glad CC is back. I'll continue to support them because they're cheaper and they fought Viacom and won.

How do you know that? the financial terms of the deal haven't been made public.
