If we're going to lose it anyway maybe we can trade for the NFL network and NFL Season Ticket in exchange for Comedy Central and a channel to be named later :p Maybe throw in a low draft pick also to sweeten the deal :p

Nope the contract says the channels are subject to change. Hell they could get rid of all the channels but 1 and you still have to pay the price you agreed too.

i doubt it, if they could only broadcast 1 channel, i'm pretty sure you would be able to get out of your contract.

they hate me i think, i got the 1st three months free with my deal, then i paid 1 month regular price, now i get 5 weeks credited for non service, at the end of my 1 year i'll only have paid them like $240 or so and i get to keep the dish and equipment at the end of the 1 year.

According the the contract they can. I am just telling you what the contract says. It says they can remove any channel they want.

Just a few more hours and viacoms channels will go bye bye and dish network.

However, that $29.99/month America's 60 pak with local channels is a hell of a deal. Definitely beats my $100/month cable bill.

Really? That deal isn't so bad. Though Charter's Top 70 for $29.99/month is better. How about Top 70 with a digital box and HBO/CINEMAX/STARZ for $49.99 until January 2005? Yea I like that over any garbage dish company.

I think he's referring to the contract between Dish Network and its customers.

Well, Dish just dropped all Viacom channels. That includes my local CBS.
See ya later Dish network, hello DirecTV.
Wonder how many people are going to be dropping Dish? I know 2 other family members that are calling to cancel right now. I'll be calling as soon as I get home from work tonight.

Viacom comes out swinging:

"They recently hiked their subscribers' bills by as much as $3 a month. Yet they are unwilling to consider paying an additional six cents a month per subscriber for the right to carry our channels," Viacom said in a statement.

When we are all supposed to move to HDTV (which I think is un-American to begin with), will we see this type of petty bickering all the time when contracts are about to expire? I know Time Warner had trouble a few years back when a local TV station wanted more money for being aired on cable. They fought it out in public with full page newsprint ads and on TV as well. I wonder if anyone in Congress is bored enough or looking for a soapbox to take on this issue. (The issue being the alteration of a program to air a corporate beef.)

MTV, VH1, BET, and Comedy Central channels are gone, still have SpikeTV.

I wonder who is going to cave first. If Dish Network customers start cancelling their subscriptions I think Echostar will probably agree to any terms.

At least SpikeTV (which I thought Viacom owned) doesn't appear to be affected by this. Now all I need is Comedy Central back and the loss of the other channels really won't bother me at all. We still have CBS here since CBS doesn't own our local affiliate.

The problem is, Dish is in a tough position no matter what they do. If they agree to the Viacom extortion, rates will go up for everyone using Dish. That will anger most customers and cause people to cancel their subscriptions.

If Dish refuses to give in and holds out for a better contract with Viacom to keep customers bills the way they are now, they anger customers cause they lose the channels and cause people to cancel their subscriptions.

Either way, Dish will lose customers. It's just a matter of which poison is the lesser of evils. The '6 cent increase' quoted by Viacom is complete rubbish. Other numbers I've seen mention how Viacom is looking for 200million increase for new channels and 350million increase for existing channels (or something like that). Thats like 500 million of additional fees, not sure over how many years that is. But given that Dish subscribers number nowhere near that amount, thats a hefty increase to split among the subscriber base.

This whole dispute shows exactly what big media conglomerates are bad and what they are doing is really getting into the grey area of legality. Especially since not every Viacom carrier is being forced to bundle and accept rate increases to the extent that Dish is.

While it sucks being without some channels I like, I'd have to side with Dish on this one.

The issue will eventually be resolved though. I can't imagine Dish would permanently remove such high-profile channels like CBS, Nick, and MTV. Especially CBS. Not all markets lost it but mine did. Not being able to watch CBS is just ridiculous and nobody would subscribe to Dish over Directv if they could get CBS with one and not the other.

I swear.. Television is shooting itself in the foot. They are losing customer time from people like us in droves to other media outlets (Internet), they are increasing the amount of commercials to about 1/3 of all TV time, they are increasing prices, they are bickering and adding/removing channels, and they are cancelling and rearranging shows before the consumer even has time to get used to watching them. I can't wait until there's widespread public backlash against television and the way it is controlled now.

I dream of a day where I can just pay for the shows I want without commercials. I will have the shows delivered to my computer, set top boxes, PDA, etc and I can watch them wherever and whenever I want. If I'm sick of a show, I will quit paying for it. Some shows can cost more than others until the right market balance is found per show. All networks will know exactly how many people are watching a show based on how many people are paying for it. Piracy won't deter from people paying for shows if the shows are delivered more conveniently and cheap enough via the pay system.

Dammit! :| CBS covers all the basketball championships this weekend. Oh boy, Dish is going to have it's hands full when everyone realizes this.
