Kinda like a Cruise ship in international waters, I don't agree with a few of their policies either, but if you get on one in a situation like that you play by their rules.

I am guessing the airline company and passengers wanted to get their destination instead of wasting time dealing with that *****. I would have given him a seat surrounded by various women if the situation was under my control.

Then again, that's where today's conservatives are. They don't dare to speak in favor of discriminating against racial minority, at least on the surface, but they are comfortable against women, it seems. And of course the justification is "religious freedom." (as if religious doctrines did not support other invidious discrimination in the past)

In orthodox Jewish synagogues, men and women sit in different sections. This separation also applies to other public events, and it isn't based on any notion of women being "inferior;" after all, men and women from the same families are separated at public events. My understanding of this tradition is that it's intended to avoid sexual temptation. This objective is also why orthodox Jewish women wear wigs and don't sing in public, as a woman's hair and voice are considered to be highly sensual.

So interpreting this custom as "discrimination" is absurd.

But to get back to the specific El Al incident, these Haredim have no one but themselves to blame. They knew ahead of time that they were unwilling to bend the rules and sit next to women when they were in a mixed group with non-Haredim on the flight, so to create a huge disturbance on the flight was therefore totally assaholic. The honorable and ethical thing would have been to charter a flight just for Haredim, and seat the male and female passengers exactly the way they wanted.
