If this had been a white person who refused to sit next to a black, the person would have been removed from the flight.

Orthodox Jews create chaos on El Al flight from New York by demanding men and women sit apart for the 11-hour flight to Israel in order to satisfy religious laws

So why do orthodox jews get a free pass at discrimination?

What is the difference in orthodox jews demanding women and men be separated, and restaurants have a black and white section?

Maybe restaurants should require all non-whites to sit in the back of the back? Lets do it in the name of religion.

It's a Israelian Airline and once it gets in the air it has not much to do with the US perhaps?

I have no give a shit about it more or less I suppose.

Kinda like a Cruise ship in international waters, I don't agree with a few of their policies either, but if you get on one in a situation like that you play by their rules.

 Where on earth do you find this stuff?

I guess if you find yourself on an airplane traveling to Israel with a bunch of Orthodox Jews you could tell them to fuck off... then again, I'm not sure why the OP would ever be on a flight from JFK to Israel in the first place.

In the US it is legal to follow your religion
In the US it is illegal to discriminate based on race

I am guessing the airline company and passengers wanted to get their destination instead of wasting time dealing with that *****. I would have given him a seat surrounded by various women if the situation was under my control.

Then again, that's where today's conservatives are. They don't dare to speak in favor of discriminating against racial minority, at least on the surface, but they are comfortable against women, it seems. And of course the justification is "religious freedom." (as if religious doctrines did not support other invidious discrimination in the past)

If you really want to know why, maybe you should be asking the Israeli airline that allowed this to happen.

In orthodox Jewish synagogues, men and women sit in different sections. This separation also applies to other public events, and it isn't based on any notion of women being "inferior;" after all, men and women from the same families are separated at public events. My understanding of this tradition is that it's intended to avoid sexual temptation. This objective is also why orthodox Jewish women wear wigs and don't sing in public, as a woman's hair and voice are considered to be highly sensual.

So interpreting this custom as "discrimination" is absurd.

But to get back to the specific El Al incident, these Haredim have no one but themselves to blame. They knew ahead of time that they were unwilling to bend the rules and sit next to women when they were in a mixed group with non-Haredim on the flight, so to create a huge disturbance on the flight was therefore totally assaholic. The honorable and ethical thing would have been to charter a flight just for Haredim, and seat the male and female passengers exactly the way they wanted.

Does this mean you're going to stop trying to force your views on the forum? Guess you need to stop posting entirely as that's the purpose of the vast majority of your posts in here.

:awe:

I feel like I enter this walking into a toothless hiker's thread.

How am I forcing my views upon others?

Am I refusing to sit next to you?

In the US it is legal to follow your religion
In the US it is illegal to discriminate based on race

This incident happened while the plane was on US soil

Passengers aboard an El Al flight from New York's JFK to Israel caused a delay after hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews demanded that other passengers trade places before takeoff, saying they cannot sit next to women.
In the US it is not legal to try to impose your religious views on others,

If this was a bunch of Mormons refusing to sit next to a group of gay members (legal in Israel and a popular destination for gay groups) on an El Al flight, a lot of you phony liberals would be crying bloody murder.

So we're arguing that a private airline can't move passengers around in the cabin?

Interesting.....

Aren't those guys on every corner screaming about us going to hell imposing their religious views on others? What about all the blue laws in the US?
If Mormons don't want to sit next to gays, I don't care

You either provide proof of this actual situation, exactly like the conditions you stated, or stop speculating.

You know exactly what I meant. Discrimination is not tolerated.

How many hours was the flight held up?

It is sad when any group is discriminated against, much less in the name of religion and women.

These people suck so bad. I would have just tossed them off the plane.

Assholes...
