Does anyone else freakin' love this channel?

I only wish they had more original content.

Build It Bigger just started:
Coaster Build Off
TV-PG (L)

Danny Forster launches headlong into scream engineering --- building, designing and riding some of the greatest roller coasters on the planet. Danny works with two construction teams who create every exacting detail to make the ride both scary and safe.

um, wow... huh.. that is quite the statement.

Anyway, great station. The Build it bigger is pretty cool but i very much dislike the host. They guy is just whiny and annoying. Sunrise Earth also amazing. Planet Earth, just stunning. Blue Planet, haven't seen it yet, but also looks amazing.

Dish or DirecTV. Which and why?

You can Dish it Directly into my TV. So I guess I can swing either way.

You do deliver and install, right?

It's a beautiful channel for sure, but I find I'm often uninterested in what's on the channel. I want to see more Planet Earth, it's never on. I also would like to see mythbusters/dirty jobs in HD (those both Discovery shows?)

I just finished my recorded beaver and teton shows from a couple weeks back. This is one of my favorite channels along with Mojo.

They're on Discovery HD, which isn't the same channel as Discovery HD Theater.

Um... they're there? Is that maybe a different Discovery channel or something? I'm on Dish, if that makes a difference.

This is what I want to know. When I watch Mythbusters on on the regular channel it says that it's available in high definition, but it doesn't show up in HD on any of my channels. I'm forced to watch it with black bars on all four sides of the picture.

Discovery HD, TLC HD and Animal Planet HD are available on Dish, among other providers.

Discovery HD Theater and Discovery HD are NOT the same. Discovery HD is an HD simulcast of the Discovery Channel. It does include native HD epsiodes of some of the programs you mentioned.

Not that I didn't already say that earlier ;)

You didnt mention that "Discovery HD is an HD simulcast of the Discovery Channel.". I have comcast and that channel isnt available. That is why I was asking.

I seriously need to look into dish.... Anyone live in the Northwest (ie cloudy most of the winter) and get good reception?

I did say that those programs were available on Discovery HD, which is not the same as Discovery HD Theater. I realize I didn't elaborate, thus the wink. Cut me some slack ;)

Also realize that HD simulcast doesn't neccesarily mean that the program was shot in HD. If they show older programming it may not be sourced in HD, though Discovery has been preparing for HD for awhile. That said, the inevitable older 4:3 SD material will likely be zoomed/cropped (not stretched) to better fit a widescreen ratio.

As far as switching to Dish, I think you'd be relatively happy. Dish has been great lately about adding HD (between August and September we're seeing 10-15 new channels). Their current generation of equipment is pretty solid as well - I think their HD DVR is a great implementation with some nice features. I can't imagine you'd have issues due to cloud cover. I've only ever had issues during the strongest rainfall/storms and rarely else. I'm not in the NW though, though we do have fairly cloudy winters in MN.

That said, I have heard a rumor about Comcast adding several HD channels around October. How true that might be and what channels is just speculation, though.
