LOL! I love your mindset. How much did you pay them to make that $240? Banking is not charity you know...

I have a Discover and a BECU Visa, and I've used both (on a regular basis). I don't buy enough to carry a balance on more than one of them, but it's nice to have them when I need them. Discover's only been rejected from one store.

That would be $0, I said I made $240, just pay off your monthly balance.

I have had Discover forever and have never had a problem.
I know you are in the finance business, so can you recommend another CC with the 'cash back' feature?
Interest rate is unimportant and I have excellent credit.

His point was that they induce higher spending than you would otherwise.

Spending that otherwise would be paid in cash or other CCs with no rewards.

Would you have had to change your spending habits to do so? I.e. wait for a few weeks before getting paid, pay with checks, in cash, etc?

I hate them, a discover telemarketer kept calling me back about balance transfers for which I was not interested. Instead of being polite about it and valueing a card member, this moron starts arguing with me and using profanity. I called their call center to file a complaint and the one who answered my call started to argue with me as well (different person).

Discover Cards are great if you pay off your monthly balance every month (like you're supposed to). I average about $100 a year in cash back bonuses, and I didn't have to pay a cent of interest or monthly fees to get it :)

Nope, if anything I would be happy to have a 30 day interest free extension before paying my bills. Why wouldn't you? Plus you get 1% cashback for using Discover.

hmmm, i must still be a young-un. i've only had 1 credit card, but i'm pretty proud that i'm still a college student, and my interest rate is down to 9.9%.
I never carry a balance, so I just brag about my credit limit.

$13,000 and I'm only 21. On one card. Card member since I was 19.

Yeah BP Visa loves me :)

Credit Card companies make money off you even if you don't carry a balance, they get a percentage of every sale. So even if you pay your bill, they are going to keep increasing your limit so you'll use it more...

Tell that to CrapitalOne, i've had a card going on 5 years now and they raised it once from $1000 to $1,500, i've never missed a payment and I always pay in full. I'll get a new card evenutally but I'll keep the capitalOne card because its good for my credit score.

My worst memory of the Discover card comes from when I was only 7 years old and it was my first time at DisneyWorld. My parents brought $100 cash for gifts and food, and the discover to pay entrance. They didn't accept discover, so we paid cash to get it. The damn thing wouldn't work at ATM's, so we went all day without food and came back without anything to remember it buy. Infinitesimal to most.. Yes. Emotionally scarring to me :(

I see that you're in NY. Chase offers various Visa cards with different cash-back rewards. Some people like Discover, some don't. I don't. Their rates are sky-high and their service is piss-poor. Personally, cash back is much less a concern than customer service.

Don't know if someone else pointed it out, but Sams Club ONLY takes Discover, so that is kinda weird.

I have both cards, and while Discover is not excellent, it's definitely better than Citibank Dividends.

As for Cap One, their "no-hassle" card is the joke of the finance industry. Those guys practically invented the use of credit card customer databases for mass cross-marketing purposes.

But hey, I'm just some guy on the internet... :p

after i got the discover, i rarely rarely used the cap one, and once i charged gas on it, i got a call from them to make sure that it wasnt a fraudulent charge. i thought it was a nice gesture on their part, but they were tryuing to cover their as5 too. but anyways, thanks for the info. i dont mind mail spam at all, though... but glad they dont sell my email :)

I love my Discover card. I have a Visa card, it's always giving me problems, but my Discover card was my first card and has always been great to me.

You should be thankful that Discover is keeping an eye on suspicious activity.

Visa and Mastercard are under a huge class action lawsuit right now.

Maybe it depends on the issuing bank, but my Providian Visa is a piece of plastic crap. They raised my rate up to 24.99% and added an annual charge without notifying me, but my Discover card they actually lowered my rate automatically and increased my credit limit.

Discover is still accepted by a majority of vendors, although I've seen more of a occurence where Discover wasn't accepted in some online stores. Visa and Mastercard have been working together to try and monopolize credit card acceptance, which is why they are being sued right now.

Hmm... I guess I've never had that problem because I try not to over indulge in credit spending. Not a very good practice IMHO.

The only time I use Discover is for online shopping, but I did use it recently to pay my taxes.

twas unbeknown to me. cap one was the first card i ever got, so i stuck with them. discover is my most-used card now because it has cashback... i dont keep balances so apr means nothing to me. i see no reason why either card is bad?

Wow I didn't realize that. That explains why Sears lets you pay your Discover card bill at their store.

Last time I checked, Discover was a part of Morgan Stanley...they probably have a partnership with Novus or something though.
