Disappointed with DooM³ sound

That's interesting.
And here I thought I was the only one hearing the distortion also.
I run with an albatron NF2 mobo with that soundstorm stuff and I have a feeling it might be the problem.
I have been fiddling with my SPDIF DD5.1 setup and my analog miniplug logitech speakers and I've discovered a few things:

(1). Doom3 audio on analog logitech speakers sound great
(2). Doom3 audio on DD5.1 setup is scratchy and distorted at times(It's actually QUITE often)
(3). DVDs on analog logitech setup sound fine
(4). DVDs on DD5.1 setup sound awesome

Having figured these things out, I worry that the soundstorm DD5.1 might have some strange inability to play well with doom3. It seems to work fine otherwise though. Does anyone else have an NF2 mobo with soundstorm using the SPDIF to output to a DD5.1 receiver/speaker setup for doom3?

You may be right, I am using an A7N8X-DLX with a soundstorm and am very unimpressed with the sounds. Every other game sounds great. I am just using analog though with headphones.

Perhaps we should email ID.

Hehe,

Let's not be too rash.
I'd rather not knock on Mr. Carmack's door riffing his product until we have enough people with the same problem to back us up.
Anyone wanna fire up a poll or maybe another thread even?

Oh wait...
Others are reporting problems also.
Post in this thread to try and get the ball rolling:

I have no technical issues with the sound and I agree it's not the best. However, it's pretty good. Farcry is a hard game to live up to, that game sounds phenomenal. Sometimes doom 3 sounds really great, but it's not often. The weapons sound really weak and pathetic. So do most of the monsters (not all). In other regards the sound is well-done. I don't think it's as good as we were led to believe before the game came out, though.

thats wierd that ppl with soundstorm thinks that doom3 sound bad. The game sounds awesome on by board with 2.1 speakers (don't have surround sound speakers, but I will buy surround sound headphones soon).

I am using Soundstorm Audio on an NFORCE2 and I do not have any problems with doom3 sound. It is beyond any level of sound that has been reached to this point. The weapons sound weak, but realistic. This is a problem counter-strike had also. Lots of people would make realistic weapon packs only to find out that most people did not like the reality that their weapons don't sound that amazing.

The environmental affects are where Doom3 shines.

It's funny that those guys over on the forums Sust posted links to are blaming it on nVidia and their SoundStorm audio since I'm having the exact same problems with my Audigy 2 ZS. It's a problem with Doom 3... I hope they release a patch soon because it's extremely annoying when I'm in the middle of a fight and the sound cuts out. Doom 3 is one game you CANNOT play without sound.

i have an audigy 2platinum, and have not experienced one problem with the sound...... Are you guys overclocking? Carmack said this game my cause problems for people who overclocked... Not sure how this would affect sound though....

I dont know where the problem is coming from, but I hope it gets fixed soon.
Nvidia and Id need to get together and get things working.

For those of you with NF2 mobos, there are 2 ways of outputting audio to speakers:
(1) Using the SPDIF output(coaxial cable or toslink optical thingy)
(2) Using the 3 minijack connections for the speaker out/microphone/line-in

I have ONLY had problems with option #1.
In fact, I have stopped using #1 because #2 sounds better even though I only have left&right speakers plus subwoofer.
How many of you are doing option #1 and having problems?

Side note:
Dammit, I was hoping to pick up a 20 dollar 5.1 sound card and get this frickin dolby digital stuff going.
Nooooooooo.....!
Please tell me that this is an isolated case.

I think his overclocking comment was strictly related to video cards... and like you said, I don't know how video card stability would effect sound card stability.

But just for shyts n giggles I may put every componant back to stock speeds and see if I get the same problem.

I think virtualgames0 and others are experiencing something with the Soundstorm. What he is describing is not normal. I get no hissing or humming in the background at all (I do get a subtle steam sound from holding the plasma gun).

But I haven't experienced anything he has described.

Could you try analog out to a two speaker sub combo and report back?

I think I am using analog out on my speaker system. I am using the 2 speaker out cables to an amp that powers 4 speakers and a sub as well as my headphones. I am not seeing the problem.

I don't have a problem with the engine... but with the quality of the individual sounds.

They're poor quality, plain and simple. The intro music and much of the in-game sounds feel like they wre recorded in a tin can. If you open up the PAK files and play the files in Winamp you'll see what I mean... they're just not great quality.

i seriously think now that they did the low rate sound compression for a reason. Could it be possible that since there is so much sound going on in different ways, that if the sounds werent compressed, it would lag the game up? What I am saying is that I bet they did it to gain performance. Maybe they will release a pack to upgrade the sounds.

anyways, who thinks that this release is just one of a series? When I beat the game, it didnt seem like that was the final ending.........

Just as a follow up, I went out and got a turtle beach riviera at microcenter for 40 bux.
It actually has the SPDIF out also and it works just fine.
Still very curious why soundstorm is a little problematic.

If you do have an NF2 mobo, then please goto the link in my previous post and post so that we can get NVDA and Id to fix it.

for those who have soundstorm and having problems with 5.1, do you have clone encoding enabled in surround settings? When I got my 5.1 headphone yesterday, they started giving popping sounds in doom3. Today I turned it off and played Doom3 and had no problems and the game sounded great. To find it, go in your NVmixer, go to the speaker setup page (where it shows what type of speakers you have (2.1, 4.1, ect...) and click on surround settings. In encoding, chose none instead of clone. Hope this helps you out.

Just went out and got a set of Z-640s on the cheap for this. I didn't notice a huge change at all ... until one section where I was jumped from behind no less than three times - hear enemy, 180, kill, hear enemy, 180, kill ... you get the idea. Utter awesomeness. I don't need to "think" about where they might be - I just know. Scare factor ++ as well. :Q

BTW, nF2 board with 3x analog cables, and no pops, crackles, hissing, static, etc, in the background. Don't know what you guys are bitchin about. 😛
