The truly strange data point here is the 3.5x performance increase that AMD’s ancient Phenom II X4 955 sees between its unplayable DirectX 11 performance and its passable DirectX 12 performance. This is a pretty neat observation in that it gives us some hope that DirectX 12 will improve the relative standing of older multicore CPUs like this almost seven-year-old chip.

As an owner of an ancient Phenom II X4, I like this news :D

The numbers in the test is also quite odd unless I am missing something. Fury X and 5960X numbers should be identical. Not to mention their async test with changed parameters.

Waiting for Carrizo results... Expecting a mayor humiliation from Phenom II results.

INB4, Phenom II is far better than current Carrizo.

This gives me good incentive to upgrade my old i5-2400 to an i7-2600 on the cheap!

More threads, more fun! :D

I am sure the final boost from DX12 is going to be very game dependent and hardware dependent. Ashes (RTS game with a lot of draw calls) on an old, slow cpu like the phenom, is undoubtedly the best case scenario for DX12. And even then, I still consider it more of a technical demo than a real game at this point.

So overall, I am sure we will see a benefit, but very rarely if ever this kind of boost in a variety of types of real world games. It will be interesting to see the benefit in gpu bound games, which are the vast majority of games still, at least until the new 14/16 nm dgpus come out.

Edit: but if DX12 results in a revival of RTS games, that would be great in and of itself. It is one of my favorite genres, but hardly any games are coming out these days. BTW, is there any kind of release date for Ashes? Seems like we have been in early beta forever.
