FTR, a second beta is not Beta 2. It is just a second release. Beta 2 is semi-officially cancelled. MS moved the release time to August 2006 (seems that they get a bonus if it releases in Q3 - motivated!) The next official release will be a release candidate. In the mean time, there will be incremental releases, but they will not be Beta 2.

As for DirectX 10 not supporting older DirectX, I call shens. I have not heard that from any of the MS channels yet. XP has some much stuff in it to support older apps from pre Windows 95 days. Remember, they support all of that old crap that you wish folks would get off of already. They will not alienate their customer base that much, even if we wish they would.

Considering the main gaming app I run is World of Warcraft, and its pretty much the only game I've touched in a year, except for maintance days, and I'm entirely happy looking forward to the new content coming for the next year(s,) I am not really excited by this new OS downgrade option... unless for some reason Blizzard code an entirely separate DX10 version.. which will no doubt have issues attached to it.

well vista isn't going to be widely adopted and supported by game developers until long after the 7800is old though. game devs aren't just gonna drop a huge chunk of their customers, i'm sure they will lag.

Considering Beta 2 has not been released, I find that difficult to believe. Whatever CTP version you torrented is NOT Vista Beta 2.

You are out of date check the news it is already released.

You apparently didn't read my post. This is news from 5 days ago. CNET.COM

""The second beta of Windows Vista will not come until next year, Microsoft said Tuesday.

The software maker did not give a time frame for the release of Beta 2 of the operating system, and said only that it would have more to say next year. Microsoft had not said when Beta 2 will come, but some had expected it might come in December or January. " "

MICROSOFT said that on Nov 30th.

You should check the news. You're not using a real beta.

I'm not too particularly worried about it really. Suprised Direct X has been around as long as it has been. Eventually MS was going to make a move like this. Came later rather than sooner is all. Progress keeps moving along.

vista beta2 is comming out in q1 2006, likely late jan early feb.

it is NOT cancelled, and it is NOT released yet.

u might have a build that says beta2, but its not, many post beta1-builds say beta2 at various places.

Features and Security in Internet Explorer. LOL. They've basicaly copied everything good from Firefox and slapped a Micro$oft badge on it. But it's still IE underneath.

Also, there's talk that microsoft is stepping up it's release schedule for Vista (to first-half '06), since Bill Gates is getting worried about Google Search and Firefox gaining mainstream popularity.

Read Here.

Build 5259 is NOT Beta 2. It was initially supposed to be the CTP (Community Technology Preview) as that article states, but it was changed.

Read Here also.

"There are currently no plans to release any more interim builds after the November CTP until beta 2 although Microsoft said that that is open to change if they feel there are builds beta testers should receive."

Here too!

"Microsoft today held online chats with both Beta Testers and the Media to discuss the future of the Windows Vista Testing Program after questions came up after TAP Testers received Windows Vista Build 5259 to test "

Build 5259 will not be a CTP and released to Technical Beta Testers. Only TAP Testers received the build.

CNET.COM - I guess Microsoft and Cnet are lying

You really should listen to people when they tell you you're wrong. Do I need to provide more links? It was a leaked CTP that they pulled from being a CTP.

MS cannot remove DX9 support. They already announced that DX9 is recommended for some features. If this is true, then they need to upgrade to DX10 requirements which means any current hardware and software is already obsolete.

I don't think MS would do that, but then again it would force many hardware and software upgrades and lots of money for MS.

What exactly is going on?

Meh...whatever MS decides to do with DX10 and Vista, Windows will still be a vastly better gaming platform than Mac or Linux, just like it is today, so it's all kind of moot.

What does everyone else think?

I think you are technically correct on the issue, but also that you are splitting hairs unnecessarily. Whether or not he has a copy officially designated as "BETA 2", he still has a copy of some sort, and since his original point was only that he likes the features that his copy of Vista has, it really doesn't matter which version it is that he has. Whatever "official" version it is, the fact is he just likes its features.

His actual quote was

"You are out of date check the news it is already released."

It's not released and we've checked the news...not him.

The CTP wasn't even released for whatever reason.

Correct, but the quote that seems to have started everything was:

Well i am using VISTA BETA2 it is awesome very nice new features. I really like the new Explorer 7, it has nice features, and security. Oh did i mention i am using it on my laptop with X200M video card from ATI with Turion 1.6GHZ 1MB CACHE.

I'm not disputing that he's wrong, just that his correctness on this issue doesn't affect what he originally said, so really both sides should just let it drop, as I'm sure most people agree he's wrong, and convincing him that he's wrong doesn't really gain anything other than a victory in principle.

Agreed, it's just better not to have false information spread around.
