DirecTV DSL is gone-

grrr... that sucks! 🙁
It's hard to find a compatitive one with static IP and good service as DIRECT TV in Bay Area. I love their generous webspace, they said only 5MB/each account up to 25MB (5 screen names) , but they never cap it (I have almost 100MB for 1 screen name)

PacBell is ok with the service but dynamic IP and PPPoE really suck.

If anyone finds a good deal, please keep me informed, thanks!

How about DirecWay satellite internet? I saw an ad for this and thought DTV was associated with them somehow (besides being on channel 227).

sounds good.. how fast is it though. they really skirt around the answer in their faq:

Q: How fast is DIRECWAY compared to other high-speed services? Aren't they faster?
A: Everyone's Internet technology is based on shared bandwidth, so sometimes one option will allow you to do things in less time than others. But because everyone uses shared bandwidth there's truly no definitive answer.

probably not good for gamers though..

Q: What is transmission latency?
A: Latency refers to the time it takes for signals to travel to and from the satellite. This typically creates a sub-second lag. For this reason, DIRECWAY may not be ideal for playing some "twitch-games".

Oh well, DSL Extreme it is!! PPOE is the debbil!!!

How is DSL Extreme? They have a plan that's $40/month ($50 after first year) and a free modem if you sign up for a 1 year contract. I'm thinking about going for it, but I wasn't sure about their "dynamic one computer" connection. Does anyone know if I can still set up a router and split it between my computers?

what's so good about static IP if you just surf the internet? Is static Ip good if you run servers, which are illegal when it comes to consumer-oriented web access?

Direct TV DSL gives you free static IP and lets you run a whatever server on your PC.
With a static IP, you can easily hook up to a router without dial the ISP. Your connection is still on even you shut down all your PCs.

I don't know how can I set up a LAN with a dynamic IP ?

Another question: What's so bad about pppoe??? I've been using it for almost 2 years now and it's been great.

The same way you set it up with a static IP.

QTPie, people hook up routers with cable modems all the time, and they use DHCP. WHat are you talking about.

Man that blows BIG TIME!!!!! I've been with them for two years, never an outae or a problem. I really hate to go elsewhere!

DirectTV DSL let you run your own servers, as long as you didn't make any money of 'em. They also encouraged the use of an "alternative" os (linux).

Direcway will soon give up the ghost as well...

Yahoo News

The company will continue to offer its Direcway service, which offers high-speed Internet access via satellite with over 160,000 subscribers, but it said it will not increase its subscriber base aggressively in an effort to avoid the costs associated with acquiring subscribers.

Hughes' Shaw has said in the past that the Direcway service is not cost competitive with either cable or DSL Internet service and has said the company will consider its options regarding the business if a profitable business model cannot be found.

What's the precedent here?

I have DSL service in the Atlanta area, will they just outright shut us off? I don't want to have an internet outtage of another weeks as another carrier sets the line up. Can we get a smooth transition to another ISP (like Bellsouth)? Plus, I do not want to pay set up fees for another ISP if at all possiible. Anybody know what has happend in the past when DSL services went down? These guys have 160,000 customers, this is a pretty big deal.

I've heard nothing but good things about them. If you check DSL Reports they are one of the most highly rated ISPs around. DirecTV DSL had very mixed reviews. I love it and I hope DSL Extreme will be as good. I just dislike Verizon's cap on non-Verizon DSL. In other words, if Verizon is the local telco, unless you subscribe to their DSL they will cap you at 768/128 period. I know I can achieve 1.5Mbit connection but I don't want to have to go through Verizon. I think DSL Extreme also lets you host your own webpages in addition to the webspace they provide. I don't currently host any pages but like the idea that I can. For this static IP is a must.
