Wentelteefje, I just can't spend more than $100 at this time and I'm tired of getting killed (DOD:S) with my Video lag! But I do thank you for your help. So 9600XT it is?

You know, after all your hard work uncovering the secrets of the 6800GS AGP, I'd think you'd put a little more effort into finding the best sub-$100 card.

Come on man, don't give up so easy! If you really put your mind to it you'll be able to find a new $100 shipped 9800pro or used 6600GT.

If you don't want to put forth the effort get the 9600xt. After all the benchmarking articles etc. that you've read for the 6800GS AGP I think you understand the difference in performance.

Thanks for your encouragement.

Agree with zagood on this one... There are plenty of 9800Pro's out there... After all, it was one of ATI's most popular cards... And for a reason!

EDIT: This one maybe...? $ 90 + $ 10 = $ 100! 😉

If you really are gunna buy at the 9600XT level, i bought a ABIT vguru 9550 that easily got to 9600XT speeds...

The first one has ended already (or was it you, PC Surgeon?) 😉 The second one only has a 64-bit memory interface...? Wouldn't trust that one... 🙁

EDIT: Seeing those Radeons makes me sad, because recently I had one that died on me... Such a pity... 🙁

Nope wasn't me....and I know about the PRO imposter 😉 Just waiting on my money from a sale...then VC upgrade time! As long as I stay home and don't spend anything!

A 9600 Pro or 9600XT would either be an improvement of around 2X from a 9200.

A 9600 level card will not play FEAR or Call of Duty 2 at high settings, but should do moderately well at low-medium settings.

For just about all other games, a 9600 Pro will play just fine.(A 9600 Pro can play FarCry and Half Life 2 at 1024X768 max settings no aa/af and maintain playability throughout the entire game. Doom 3 can do maximum settings, but will go down very low when there is some serious action.

As long as you do not plan to go above 1024X768, then even most newer games except the really slow cod2 and fear will run decently well. ALL pre doom 3 games will likely run at 1600X1200 with aa/af smoothly.

The 9600 was and is a decent card. If you cannot afford/find a good deal on a 9700/9800 level card, then it is probably your best bet. Make sure that the 9600 pro has a gpu clock of 400Mhz and a memory clock of 300Mhz(600Mhz ddr). The 9600XT has the same memory clock while having a 500Mhz gpu clock. Also make sure the memory bus is 128 bit and not 64 bit.

LOL! Thanks BlackJesus, I needed the laugh. There is no point, as another poster pointed out in another thread " it's a 9700p, not a 9700pro"...some kind of trickery if you ask me.
