I have a Direct X8 VC (see sig) but I also have Direct X9 software. would there be a difference in resolution if I had a DX9 compatable hardware card?

What do you mean by difference in resolution? You mean, will you have higher resolutions available?

I'm sorry, I didn't explain myself clearly. What I meant was, will the Image Quality be better?

in image quality, yes.

DX8/8.1 is ps 1.0 or 1.1 or 1.3 or 1.4
DX9 is either PS2.0, 2.0+, 2.0++ 2.0B or 3.0

makes a difference in reflection/transperency/lighting/shadow effects.

Yes. Even if you got exactly the same card with DX9 support, you would notice a change in IQ.

That's pretty moot though, any card you got with DX9 support would be better than your 9200.

Resolution? Resolution in what?

Desktop resolution is mostly depended on your monitor. But if you have a large monitor (ie dell 30" LCD) and that garphics card, not sure if it is up for the task..

Game Resolution - Again monitor, but a DX9 card is probally faster (if you get a faster model) then you can play games at higher Resolutions.

But DirectX is a toolset that allows developers to take advantage of hardware such as Graphics Cards, input device, sound cards. the Number at the end specifies the version, which usally include more features and better graphics, sounds, and/or speed improvements.

budget is more important than anything. a 6200 has DX9c and OGL2 but wont be able ot muster the muscle to run it beyond 300x200 resolution lowest settings in any modern games.
x800xt is DX9b/ogl1.5 but will run most games 1024x768 or 1280x1024 on high due to the extra muscle(it's about 6-8 times more as a general measure than a 6200tc/x300se HM)

I assume you need an AGP card? Probably a 9700 pro is the best you'll get for under $100.

If you're lucky, Newegg still has a 9800Pro in the Refurb section...

EDIT: Nope, no 9800Pro's or 6600GT's... eBay it probably is then...

I just played DOD:S (one of my favs) with FRAPS, getting high 20's to low 40's @ 800 x 600. Will getting to the level of a 9600PRO/XT get me up to 60 FPS average @ 1024 x 768?

DOD:S should do fine, as it's an ATI card... Don't expect F.E.A.R. or COD2 to run flawlessly however...

Damn PC Surgeon, just pick a card and go with it!

You've been talking about buying a new video card for months... and you've listed just about every possible video card as an answer for you, from the 6600GTs, 6800XTs, 6800NUs, 6800GS', 6800GTs and all those X800XT-series cards for months now.

Oh, just buy a card and go with it for pete's sake!

Aha... the lifetime window shopper.

Eternally shopping, never buying. ;)

(at least you're not the guy who has a 1GHz P3 with a GeForce-2 who then rushes to buy a GeForce-3 thinking he will now be able to play today's games... save, save, save!).

LOL :p No fights allowed...

@ PC Surgeon: I'm not saying you'll get some 60FPS, but at least it should be more playable... Not really difficult, when compared to a 9200... ;)

However, when saving some 20 bucks more, you should be able to buy yourself a 6600GT, and that one will give you much more performance... This seems like the wisest thing to do IMO...

EDIT: 18 bucks when taking this one...

If your budget is $100 and looking at new, look for 9700 Pro (or even TX).

If you can't find one, don't go budget on the 9600 Pro, get the 9600 XT. That 20 bucks will be worth it.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102510

If you can spare the extra money, you'll get almost twice the performance of a 9600XT with the 6600GT.

Also make a post on the FS/FT forum, make sure you spell out AGP. I posted looking for a 6600GT AGP and everyone said "hey, I've got one I'll sell for $100" but they were all PCI-E.

The 9600XT that Ive seen at newegg, only has OpenGL 1.4,1.5.....none with 2.0, does that make a difference?

I wouldn't pick a 9800Pro over a 6600GT anymore... It's a lot faster in modern games and has SM3.0 aboard...
