This was a dim sum place where the waiters push carts from table to table offering different types of dim sum. Other waiters will come along to fill your water and take extra plates away.

If anything, waiters at these places do more work than at regular places. And I would leave a bigger than normal tip. $5 is cheapass for five people.

OK, that's different than a buffet, and I agree. They work for their tips...and if service is good, they deserve to be tipped.

so are you guys saying that Asians don't tip well? I had no idea.

So far I've got: shitty drivers and shitty tippers. Anything else to add to my list of stereotypes for reasons of instant judgment in public places?
:hmm:

don't forget they have small penis's..

Yeah, I think the OP referred to his asian friends tipping so low as what you'd tip at a buffet.

If you haven't tried Dim Sum, you should. Good stuff!

I've eaten dim sum for over 40 years. Some places are good...some absolutely suck.
We have one place (that I know of) here locally that serves dim sum lunches. Pretty dammed expensive IMO, and you order what you want...no carts full of delicious little morsels.

Basically a buffet is usually a dollar per person tip. This is the standard. This coming from someone who served at a buffet place during college. 5$ was just right. 10$ would be like if your server was the most extraordinary superhero ever. 4$ is when one person doesn't know they should tip and 0$ is you're never going to get clean plates again.

Really? $1 for buffet places?

Places i see have notices of 12% tip added to bill with parties of 8+

One could argue Americans are wasteful tippers by tipping 15%.

True... but once you've been lectured for being too "wasteful" by giving a 10% tip for dum sum, and having this repeated multiple times you start making assumptions.

oh fuck, how could I forget.

Also, are the rumors true about the women? Do the slanty eyes translate to the same sort of thing...down below?

:hmm:

(yes yes: cliche'd USA war movie dialogue. :D)

Sounds low. I'm not so good at math so I just double the tax. Waiter certainly deserves more than govt who does nothing for me. Works out to about 17%... you only left 10% hardly too much.

You forgot a word there, added it for you.

That's a low tip but Chinese restaurants often have lower expectations on tips.

Cheapskates, I just tipped $4 for an $8 meal at a Korean restaurant.

Rule of thumb is 20%, personally I tip a minimum of $2 if it's a small bill.
I mean if you can afford to eat out, don't be stingy, what's a few more dollars? Remember these people are trying to make a living as well.

Can't agree more with that.

Yep...the Ornamental va-jay-jay goes -- instead of |...so the farther you spread their legs...the tighter it gets. Gives small Ornamental peenors a tighter fit.

Places like this or buffet style restaurants where they only bring your drinks, I tip 10-15%.

Anything else I tip 20% or higher

I'm going to eat at one of those places this afternoon. The staff do a lot of legwork at those places.

That's pretty much the accepted standard. Being a server myself, I usually go 30% or higher, up to 50-100% if I know the person helping me. (I usually get steep alcohol discounts too).
