I'm visiting NYC and had Dim Sum for lunch.

5 of us, thus $10 each. I was about to give $2 tip when the asians at the table (who live in the area) said it's too much. So I gave $1, and one of them mentioned that $4 is more than enuf for the bill.

Buffet tipping for Dum Sum?!

your thoughts on Dim Sum tipping in NYC?

Weird. I've always tipped like a regular restaurant, but then I'm as white as they come.

On the one hand, it's dim sum, with no real serving... it's also a chinese place, so they're probably accustomed to crappy tips.
On the other hand.... I really don't know.

Tipping is dependent on the total bill and the service. Was the service good, worthy of $1? $2?

So this probably isn't a case where a swarthy waitress will collect your bill and mumble "Tipping isn't just a place in China, you know."

so are you guys saying that Asians don't tip well? I had no idea.

So far I've got: shitty drivers and shitty tippers. Anything else to add to my list of stereotypes for reasons of instant judgment in public places?
:hmm:

mmm I want some dim sum.... $1 a person would be acceptable, but $4 is kinda low for 5 people.

Everyone knows there is some truth to stereotypes. I'm Chinese, and my parents don't tip well at Asian restaurants. If you go to an Asian restaurant, you'll usually just see a couple bucks and change as tip. If I'm not mistaken, tipping isn't customary in Asian countries.

I tip based on quality of service. There is no minimum tipping BS. Shitty service = shitty tip. Simple as that.

for all I know, tipping is only customary in USA, and I'm guessing Canada, too. I certainly don't tip when I'm in Europe.
I have a habit of over-tipping, based on US customs, I suppose....but glad to know that I can happily stiff our local Asian establishments. :D

Population here seems like 60% Asian, anyway...maybe it's the cheapness, poor tipping, shitty driving that makes them all so grumpy? :hmm:

No or small tips at Asian restaurants? Damn...the Chinese restaurant we go to has "15% = $XX.XX,, 18% = $XX.XX, 20% = $XX.XX" printed on the receipt.

I will say, I don't tip well at buffet-type restaurants. I do my own serving, with the possible exception of drinks, so IMO, they really don't earn any tip except the busboy who cleans the table...and they're generally not considered "tipped employees."

I was told not to tip in Japan. I did anyway and no one ran after me when I left so I guess it's ok.

Cheapskates, I just tipped $4 for an $8 meal at a Korean restaurant.

Rule of thumb is 20%, personally I tip a minimum of $2 if it's a small bill.
I mean if you can afford to eat out, don't be stingy, what's a few more dollars? Remember these people are trying to make a living as well.

This was a dim sum place where the waiters push carts from table to table offering different types of dim sum. Other waiters will come along to fill your water and take extra plates away.

If anything, waiters at these places do more work than at regular places. And I would leave a bigger than normal tip. $5 is cheapass for five people.
